Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on DS games to shut down

General News — 19 May, 2014

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logo Just realized I forgot to post this a few weeks ago :/

Nintendo has announced that as of May 20th 2014 (tomorrow!) the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, as used by the Nintendo DS, will no longer be active. This means that all Wi-Fi services from the DS games will no longer work. The online battling, trading and game sync features of these Pokémon games are affected:

  • Pokémon Diamond, Pearl & Platinum
  • Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver
  • Pokémon Black & White
  • Pokémon Black 2 & White 2
  • Pokémon Battle Revolution
  • Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia & Guardian Signs
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness & Explorers of Sky
  • Pokémon Conquest

If you have any Pokémon in the GTS you should take them out before tomorrow.

Note that this does not affect trading and battling over local wireless/infrared. Nor does it prevent migration of Pokémon from one generation to another via Pal Park (gen 3-4), Poké Transfer (gen 4-5) or Poké Transporter (gen 5-6).

New games announced: Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire!

Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire — 11 May, 2014

Nintendo have announced a new pair of games for 3DS, to be released November 2014. They are remakes of the third-generation games Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire which were released in 2003.

These games are titled Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. The box art, which can be seen below, features Groudon and Kyogre like the original games, however they look a little different - note the symbols for the Greek letters Omega (Ω) and Alpha (α) highlighted in their designs. This is a strong hint that the two Pokémon will gain a new form or Mega Evolution (of course this is not yet confirmed).

An announcement trailer (see below) was posted by Nintendo, and then earlier today Japanese show Pokémon Get*TV previewed a tiny snippet of footage, showing the awakenings of Groudon and Kyogre.
