In platnium the first Legendary (Rotom doesn't count as a Legendary) you encounter is Mesprit at the start of the adventure (at the lake you and your rival hear it's cry after Cyrus leaves) although you can't capture it, the first battleable legendary is Giratina in the distorted world. I think.
