If you were to ask someone what the first Pokemon ever created is, you’d probably receive answers such as Pikachu and Bulbasaur. In actuality, however, Rhydon – the 112th Pokemon registered in the Pokedex – was created first. That little factoid comes from Ken Sugimori, one of the original designers of the first generation of Pokemon titles.

That does make sense, as Rhydon’s data can be found first in Red/Green. Also, this explains the statues that you see when you first step into a gym in Pokemon Red/Blue. The icon doesn’t look like Rhydon completely, but it’s pretty darn close!

According to interviews with Ken Sugimori, Rhydon's index number in the game code is 001 in Generation I, precisely because he was the first one coded in. There are also early sketches of Rhydon from Capsule Monsters, the conceptual predecessor to Pokémon.

The first ever confirmed Pokemon, was Rhydon. Trying to find dates now just want to post this, hope you don't mind :P

The first game was released in the United States on September 30, 1998. The first games, Blue, Red, and Yellow, would have the player being introduced to Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur first. Official packaging had Venusaur and Pikachu on it.
