Why does salamece's defenses lower upon evolution?

His base defense goes from 100 to 80 though I am not saying it is bad becuase his speed doubes to a decent 100 and if you breed dragon dance he is great

Some pokemon have their stats go down upon evolution. For instance, Scyther has higher speed than it's evolved form, Scizor. Shelgon as his name implies, is essentially a giant shell, and he evolves into an actual dragon. Without his shell for protection, his defenses will fall. It would be really unfair for salamance to have really high stats all around, he'd be like a legendary pokemon then.

Also note that he adds Intimidate to his arsenal, probably the main reason.
