Here's my source:

I counted everything but Temporary Pokemon because he didn't catch or even own those. I probably made a counting error at so me point because I'm not the best counter in out there, so you better double check my answer, comment any errors and I'll edited them into the answers!

Me and my army of Ponytas are always glad to help! It's fun! :)

Electric – Pikachu (S)
Grass – Snivy (S), Sewaddle/Swadloon/Leavanny, Bulbasaur, Chikorita/Bayleef (S), Treeko/Grovyle/Sceptile (Pure), Turtwig/Grotle/Torterra
Water – Oshawott ( S), Palpitod, Krabby/Kingler (S), Totodile (S), Corphish, Buizel, Squirtle, Lapras
Dragon – Gible
Fire – Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard, Tepig/Pignite (S), Cyndaquil/Quilava (S), Torkoal, Chimchar/Monferno/Infernape
Flying – Charizard, Taillow/Swellow, Gligar/Gliscor, Butterfree, Pidgeotto/Pidgeot
Dark – Scraggy, Krokorok/Krookodile
Fighting – Scraggy, Heracross, Monferno/Infernape, Primeape (S)
Bug - Sewaddle/Swadloon/Leavanny, Heracross, Caterpie/Metapod/Butterfree
Rock – Roggenrola/Boldore
Ground – Palpitoad, Krokorok/Krookodile, Donphan (S), Torterra, Gible, Gligar/Gliscor
Poison – Bulbasaur, Muk
Normal – Tauros x 30, Snorlax, Noctowl, Taillow/Swellow, Pidgeotto/Pidgeot, -Aipom-
Psychic – Noctowl
Ice – Snorunt/Glalie, Lapras

That makes;
- 1 Electric type
- 6 Grass types
- 8 Water types
- 1 Dragon type
- 5 Fire types
- 5 Flying types
- 2 Dark types
- 4 Fighting types
- 3 Bug types
- 1 Rock type
- 6 Ground types
- 2 Poison types
- 6 Normal types (technically 35 because of tauros)
- 1 Psychic type
- 2 Ice types
- 0 Steel types

Remember these will not add up to the number of Pokemon Ash has, due to most of them having dual types. Italics means that the Pokemon was released, -Pokemonname- means it was traded away, (S) means it is only of one type and / means it evolved. Also Ash technically owned a Raticate through trade, but for only part of an episode as well as a Beedrill, and a Haunter/Larvitar who travelled and battled with him but were never actually caught.

Bulbapedia Source on Ash's Pokemon, Microsoft Word and alot of counting :D

Hm. I wouldn't be surprised if you got my BA. xD
haha nah, debateable :P you went into the detail of full type/secondary/primary. I went into each different pokemon and if they had been traded away or not :P
Urm... no need to be a bother but noctowl is normal / flying XD
So ash really had 0 psychic types and that mean +1 normal type

Ash caught:

Full-type Pokemon (evolutions not included)
35 Normal (should be noted that he caught 30 Tauros in the Safari Zone)
4 Fire
7 Water
5 Grass
1 Electric
1 Ice
1 Fighting
1 Poison
1 Ground
1 Flying
0 Psychic
1 Rock
1 Ghost
0 Dragon
0 Dark
0 Steel

Primary Dual-type Pokemon
6 Normal
0 Fire
2 Water
0 Grass
0 Electric
0 Ice
0 Fighting
0 Poison
2 Ground
0 Flying
0 Psychic
1 Rock
0 Ghost
1 Dragon
1 Dark
0 Steel

Secondary Dual-typed Pokemon
0 Normal
0 Fire
0 Water
2 Grass
0 Electric
1 Ice
2 Fighting
1 Poison
3 Ground
7 Flying (All secondary dual-typed Flying Pokemon have Normal as their first)
0 Psychic
0 Rock
0 Ghost
0 Dragon
1 Dark
0 Steel

NOTE: I did this with Microsoft Excel and it's wonderful functions. :D
Also note that some of these Pokemon were not particularly caught, but by other methods like trading or hatching from an egg. However, all of these Pokemon were once in his possession (and were on the source)

Hope I helped. :)

Fire:

  • Charizard, Tepig, Cyndaquil, Torkoal, Infernape.

Electric:

Ice:

  • Glalie

Fighting:

  • Scraggy, Primape

Poison:

  • I've pretty much covered all of them soo....

Psychic:

  • None

  • Butterfree, Levanny, Beedrill

Rock:

  • Roggenrola

Ghost:

  • None (that I know of)

I hate my life
Solumni lets go cry in a hole
I forgot to add, this list includes:

Traded Pokémon, Pokémon in Training with other Trainers, Pokémon Released into the wild, and Pokémon in Prof. Oaks lab.
HOLY WITENY"S MILTANK! All three of the other answers but mine where posted while I was typing for like 20-30 minutes strait XD also there are a few errors like that Ash actually caught 3 dark types. Not to be rude or anything. This is still a pretty good answer, it'll be helpful. Also, my answer included all Pokemon but Temporary ones because Ash never caught them.
