They happen when the Pokemon likes the trainer.

As far as I know, there are no evolutions based on how much the Pokemon hates the player. Pokemon that depend on happiness to evolve need to have at least 220 points in happiness.

Here are the Pokemon that evolve this way.

If a Pokemon who evolves through happiness dislikes its trainer, it will not evolve.
Every Pokemon has a friendship value. The more its happiness /friendship decreases, the longer it will take for it to evolve. Most Pokemon recquire the need a base 220 happiness

A Pokemon's Happiness/Friendship Value reaches a maximum of 255.

>Several Pokémon evolve after being leveled up when their friendship value is at least 220.

To add to this some Pokémon will only Evolve after being levelled up with high Friendship during the day or night.

Pokémon that will only Evolve after being levelled up with high Friendship during the day include:

Eevee -> Espeon
Budew -> Roselia
Riolu -> Lucario

Pokémon that will only Evolve after being levelled up with high Friendship during the night include:

Eevee -> Umbreon
Chingling -> Chimecho
