Do Pokemon get smaller when they go into a Pokeball, and/or do they become lighter? I ask this because I looked at some Steel types and I wondered if not, how could you carry 6 Pokemon so easily?

When a Poké Ball hits the Pokémon, as long as it is not deflected, the Poké Ball will open, convert the Pokémon to a form of energy, pull it into its center, and close. A Pokémon in this state is given a chance to struggle to attempt to break free from the ball and escape, being instantly re-converted from energy into matter.

As you may have seen in the anime, Pokémon turn in to a red energy form(Different animation in the games) and return to their Poké Balls, and turn back in to solid life forms when they exit. So, I would assume that their body mass does not change, but its shape and form does, making it easier to store and carry around.
How does this work? No real explanation, there isn't really a confirmed theory, only Game Freak can tell us, and even they probably don't know, it's just something invented to allow trainers to easily transport Pokémon.

Yes, but I accidentally seen like 1 or 2 month ago a scene from an episode which that girl Iris have a Dragonite in his pokeball and he looked grumpy.
Ok,I found the video(http://youtu.be/vyY0jRjrTy4) and it said mostly what you said and that Dragonite thing I said.
To put it simply, there is no way to tell exactly how a Poké Ball works, we can theorize but nothing has been confirmed.
Actually (my opinion) what happens is the red energy is just the pokemon getting smaller/bigger into the pokeball. Pokemon are in the pokeball sitting/resting inside. There is reasons i think this. For one pokemon seem to be able to react to things happening outside there ball and even jump out to join in. And even in one episode of the anime (idk which) a dragonite is shown sitting inside its poke ball. This theory is also the reason pokemon never have to do anything around sleeping/resting while outside the ball (except the rest move.) No one will really never know what actually happens but i thnk this is a good theory with evidence.
