No it cannot, sorry. The 3DS cartridges have an extra tab on the side of them so they don't fit into the DS Lite slot. The 3DS software is also incompatible with the DS Lite, so even if the cartridges did fit, you would not be able to play the game.

So unfortunately, if you do not already own a console in the 3DS family, you're going to have to buy one to play X and Y and future Pokemon games.

No it cannot.

3DS Games require a more extreme CPU than a DS. Not only that, to further prevent this, there is a stub on the side of the Game Card that blocks it from entering ANY kind of DS System except a 3DS/2DS. I'm sorry, but getting a 3DS is the next way to go. If you cannot afford one, then wait until the "New" 3DS comes out and then the older systems will probably get a price drop.
