What is a soft reset?

I was looking for a way to get a pp up in fire in red and it said I hav to todo a soft reset

A soft reset is when you refresh your game by exiting it and going to the main menu. It is commonly used for shiny hunting, or when you encounter a legendary or other Pokemon,or to get the nature that you want,or to gather any items for your journey.(Way too many or in this sentence there are) In order to soft reset you simply hold the L,R, start, and select buttons at the same time.
