Hi everyone, I've reached a bit of a dilemma concerning my Galvantula's moveset. You see, Galvantula only has two purposes: Sticky Web, and a decent Special sweeper.

However, besides Sticky Web,Thunder, and Bug Buzz, I can't figure out if I should give it Hidden Power, Energy Ball, or Giga Drain. Can anyone help me based on pros and cons?

Best answer

Hidden Power [Ice]:

  • Gives Galvantula a pseudo BoltBeam combo
  • Hits Flygon, Gligar, and Zygarde for good damage, alongside other Ground types
  • 60 Base power leaves much to be desired though

Energy Ball:

  • 90 Base power is pretty sweet
  • Gives good coverage against Ground types like Swampert
  • Although the coverage is good, it's somewhat limited

Giga Drain:

  • 75 Base power isn't really bad either
  • Gives Galvantula means to heal itself
  • This healing however is limited, as neither Grass coverage nor Galvantula's special attack are outstanding to speak of
  • Energy Ball is preferred for higher BP

Also consider this -

Thunder Wave:

  • Helps destroy opposing faster leads
  • Also slows down levitating opponents like Azelf

I would say that Energy Ball / Giga Drain are your best bets here, and Thunder Wave is also somewhat considerable. HP Ice could be chosen as well if your team has problems against Dragons and Ground types.

Here's a smogon set for Galvantula:

Galvantula @ Focus Sash
Ability: Compound Eyes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sticky Web
- Thunder
- Bug Buzz
- Thunder Wave

Thanks so much Qwerty! I've decided to go with Giga Drain because Galvantula needs some reliable recovery.
To be honest  Giga Drain is not reliable recovery at all :x, but it's totally your call. And good luck with my fav pokemon out there :3
You have a point. And being the fickle person that I am, I swapped it for Energy Ball.
