so would the flame orb do any damage to drifblim

There's no credit to take, Drifblim can't learn fling.

Flame orb activates at the end of the first turn that the Pokemon is in. So if you fling on the first turn then the opponent would burned at the end of the turn. So you should use fling on the second turn to get the burn and then burn the opponent on the second turn.
