Meta Battle Subway PokeBase - Pokemon Q&A

What is a good moveset for Gyarados? (page 2)

4 votes

Mine knows:

Earthquake: High power, double damage against Pokemon using Dig, high accuracy, used to deal with Rock and Electric types.

Strength: Good damage, high accuracy.

Dragon Dance: Boosts both Attack and Speed.

Waterfall: Good damage, high accuracy, decent chance to cause flinching, used to deal with Rock types, STAB.

If a Pokemon were to use dig,it wouldn't damage Gyarados because they are water and flying types which makes them immune to ground.
But yes,it does cover for rock and electric weakness.
Double damage though. So quicker KO.
Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Earthquake Spiral
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang
Gyarados (N) @ Choice-specs
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 252 S.Attack
Rash Nature (+SAtack, -SDef)
- Dragon-rage
- Splash
- Tackle
- Sleep talk
Epic fail set
What the heck is Earthquake Spiral???
I like the Earthquake one. Water type is super effective against rock as well but it does double damage to pokemon that use dig (which a rock type will often use).

This is the troll mega evolution.

[email protected]
Ability: Mold Breaker

Thunder Wave- Even though Mold Breaker was added for maximum sweeping potential, it turns Gyarados into less of one. Now Thunder Wave can paralyze anything.

Taunt- Combined with Thunder Wave this is a real troll.

Waterfall- STAB that pretty much OHKOs everything.

Earthquake- Another OHKO move.

Mega Gyarados is a different Pokemon than what he once was and why Game Freak didn't change him into a Water Dragon type is beyond me. Give him a Jolly nature and 252 HP/128 Atk/128 Special EVs.

Note that this is just my take on Mega Gyarados and you can still do a Dragon Dance set with Dragon Dance and Outrage replacing Thunder Wave and Taunt.

  • Earthquacke

Careful Nature

I swear Special Wall Gyarados works. I used this once and it took out like 3 opposing Pokémon. I just wish he had a more reliable form of recovery than just Lefties and Protect.

We're allowed to post pre-evolution movesets here, right?

Magikarp GOD @ Eviolite
Ability: Rattled
EVs: 200 HP / 56 Def / 252 Spe
- Hydro Pump (Jesus blessed this attack)
- Tackle (Hard hitting, lots of PP, nice stuff)
- Flail (Look at it. LOOK AT THAT FISH)
- Bounce (Nice flying type coverage. Doesn't care about anything)

Defense EVs make this baby have 240 Defense with Eviolite. Such wow!
Rattled makes this baby even faster. Whoa! Outspeeds much of OU!

Yes we're allowed to post pre-evo sets on here, and dat magikarp tho
Magikarp can't learn hydro pump
Is only moves are bounce, splash, flail, tackle
It actually can learn Hydro Pump, but only through events

Gyarados (M) @ Lum Berry
Trait: Intimidate
Impish Nature
EVs: 252 Def / 252 Atk / 4 HP
-Thunder Wave

I have been using this Gyarados , and I've seen it on Rating Battle quite a lot. I personally use Magnezone and Light Clay Reflect to set up, and then Intimidate and +252 Def really works great. You could also use a Special Wall like Dragalge, Rotom-W, or Hydreigon to switch out into in case of a Special Attack.

ORAS Mega Gyarados

Ability: Intimidate/Moxie>Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Att, 252 Spe, 4Def
Nature: Adamant/Jolly

Dragon Dance is one of best setup moves in the game and raises Attack and Speed by one stage.
Waterfall is one of two STAB moves that hits hard and can flinch. Smashes Fire, Ground and Rock types.
Crunch is the new STAB move Mega Gyarados gets from ORAS via level up. Can lower defences occasionally and hurts Psychic and Ghost types.
Earthquake is a great move and has good coverage with the other two moves. Hurts Electric, Steel and Poison types.

Gyarados (M) @ Toxic Orb or Flame Orb if using Facade / Life Orb if using Ice Fang

Trait: Moxie

EVs: 252 Atk, 128 Spd, 96 HP, 36 Def / S.Def

Nature: Adamant ( +Atk, -S.Atk )

Moveset :

                    > Dragon Dance
                    > Earthquake
                    > Aqua Tail / Waterfall if you care about Accuracy
                    > Facade / Ice Fang If you don't like your Pokemon to be Poisoned or Burned

Dragon Dance raises Attack and Speed which is good for Gyarados
Earthquake is best for Electric, Fire, Rock, Poison, Steel

Aqua Tail / Waterfall is STAB
Facade is 140 Power with the Pokemon holding Toxic or Flame Orb
Ice Fang is good for taking out the Grass, Flying, Ground, Dragon Types blocking the way.

Overall he is your Clean Sweeper of your Party.

Gyarados (M) @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate
Ev's: 6HP/252Atk/252spd
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -Sp Atk)

- Waterfall
- Bounce
- Dragon Dance/Iron Head

So I use this set because when you mega evolve Gyarados, you'll gain more weaknesses. Bounce gets rid of the fighting, Grass and bug weaknesses when it mega evolves. Waterfall is for effective stab plus the decent flinch chance. Earthquake is simply just earthquake paired with the ability that it gets when it mega evolves (Mold Breaker). D-Dance (if you decide to go with that move) I would set up first as intimidate makes your Gyarados even more bulkier in defense and the special defense is already bulky enough so you would be able to take a hit or go with iron head to take out those pesky fairies :)
