Gen V

Torkoal (M) @ Focus Sash
Ability: White Smoke
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Yawn
- Rapid Spin
- Overheat

An excellent lead set. Stealth Rock and Yawn work well together. Rapid Spin removes entry hazards that the foe is likely to set up. Overheat takes down common Steel tyype leads such as Ferrothorn and Forretress, as well as taking down leads like Roserade.

How do you guys using yawn and stealth rock  I dont under stand this strategy
sorry for necroposting, but stealth rock damages the enemy when it enters battle, so yawn forces the enemy to switch out because a sleeping pokemon is pretty easy to knock out. you're forced to take damage by switching into stealth rock

This is built for series 8 Doubles, where it will be a support Pokemon

Torkoal @ Heat Rock / Sitrus Berry / Shuca Berry
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 132 SpD
Bold / Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Yawn
- Protect
- Burning Jealousy / Eruption
- Sunny Day / Will-O-Wisp / Bulldoze / Rock Tomb / Clear Smog

Yawn: obvious move since only one restricted Pokemon is allowed, sleep is good.

Protect: gives great flexibility and stalls for Yawn.

Burning Jealousy / Eruption: I prefer the former, as although Eruption can be quite threatening, Burning Jealousy prevents a Zacian switch in harder, punishes some Dynamax moves, and Yawn is more dangerous anyway.

Customize this last slot based on what you are supporting. Some good choices are: Sunny Day, Will-O-Wisp, Bulldoze, Rock Tomb, moves to activate Weakness Policy, and Clear Smog.

Some suggestions i have are Earth power or Schorching Sands

Torkoal @ Iron Ball
Abilty: White Smoke
EVs: 252 Def / 200 SpD / 28 Atk / 28 SpA
Brave Nature
- Curse
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake
- Heat Wave

Problem with this set is it's a mixed set. I couldn't find any good physical Fire STAB, the only one found was Flame Charge -- which lowers Gyro Ball's power.

flame wheel heat crash would be an amazing replacement for heatwave

Sun Team Sweeper:

TTTTT

Torkoal @ White Herb
Ability: White Smoke
Modest / Quiet Nature
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 HP / 6 Def
- Solar Beam
- Shell Smash
- Fire Blast
- Gyro Ball / Clear Smog

Nature: Modest is good with Clear Smog and Quiet is good with Gyro Ball.
Solar Beam: Coverage + Shell Smash power
Shell Smash: Free stat raise with White Herb
Fire Blast: Great in sun + Shell Smash boost
Gyro Ball / Clear Smog: Great because of low Speed and coverage.
Clear Smog: Removes stat changes of youre opponent.

Hope I Helped Ya!

If you are running Shell Smash, it may not be wise to use Gyro Ball, as SS raises speed. If you want to use Gyro Ball, it may be better to use Curse. Of course, this is pretty much a special set, it may just be better to go with Clear Smog.

A set for one of my favorite Pokemon.

Torkoal @ Leftovers
Ability: White Smoke
EVs: 252 HP / 200 SpD / 56 Atk
Brave Nature
- Curse
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake
- Superpower

Curse- Lower that Speed and boost the Attack.
Gyro Ball- Take advantage of the lowered Speed.
Earthquake- A must for coverage.
Superpower- A strong coverage move. The stat decreases do not really matter.

Torkoal is a very versatile Pokemon and the Torkoal moveset I use is covered by tigerjay. Just in case he changes his name it has Yawn, Protect, Clear Smog, and Lava Plume.

TOUGH AS SHELL

Torkoal @ Leftovers
Ability: White Smoke
EVs: 140 Def / 252 SpD / 120 HP
Calm Nature
- Protect
- Will-O-Wisp
- Iron Defense
- Amnesia

Will-O-Wisp burns the defending Pokemon. Protect puts the burn to good use. Plus, you only take damage every other turn. It also puts Leftovers to good use. Iron Defense raises Defense by 2 and Amnesia raises Special Defense by 2.

White Smoke prevents your stats from being lowered. Every Amnesia and Iron Defense is put to good use and is not a waste.

This Torkoal is a tank. Just watch out for Taunt!

Torkoal (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: White Smoke
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 6 SpD
Modest Nature
- Lava Plume
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb / Clear Smog
- Hidden Power [Electric]

Lava Plume gets STAB and is used to try and get that sweet burn. Earth Power and Hidden Power [Electric] cover your Rock and Water weaknesses. Sludge Bomb is for Fairy types, and while Clear Smog is weaker, it can be used to prevent being set up on.

At last, an Assault Vest fan! I'd like to add a Trick Room set, though with the following moveset:
Eruption
Protect
Earth Power
Sludge Bomb/Explosion (as last resort because of not having HP electric)

Looking for tank Torkoal? Perfect then because today I'm showing you an awesome moveset for just that.

Torkoal (M) @ Air Balloon / Leftovers
Trait: Drought
EVs: 240 HP / 168 Def / 100 SpA
Bold Nature
- Yawn
- Lava Plume
- Amnesia
- Solar Beam

Torkoal (F) @ Heat Rock
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 SpA
Calm Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Eruption
- Toxic

This is a rather unique Torkoal set that takes advantage of its natural tankiness, and the max damage on Eruption at full health. Even if it takes a couple hits, just RestTalk and have a full health Eruption again.
Toxic is here as a staple to provide pressure on walls and tanks. Calm Nature for the Special Defense boost, as Torkoal already has naturally high Defense.

Ok before I gonna post an answer I would like to say that all movesets that are presented here are awesome, and I just want to share my ideas with you.

Torkoal (M) @ Heat Rock
Ability: Drought
EVs: 6 HP / 252 SpD / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Flamethrower
- Solar Beam
- Sludge Bomb
- Amnesia

I think this is a pretty decent strategy. Set up Amnesia once and then with Drought and Heat Rock, Solar Beam its weaknesses and crush your opponent!

magma turt (Torkoal) @ Leftovers
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 Def / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sludge Bomb / Solar Beam
- Flamethrower
- Amnesia
- Iron Defense

This thing is a beast. Now, this is just the set I have, and I'm not sure about the ability, but I think it's alright. Amnesia + Iron defense with stats like those are incredible. Flamethrower is boosted by STAB and Drought, while sludge bomb hits hard with poison chances. You could also go with solar beam for its water weakness, and it goes straight away with drought. These are all either easy accessible TMs or moves learnt by level, so it's not hard to get in-game.

Cant a man have two sets of Torkoal?

Torkoal @ Fire Gem
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 128 Def / 128 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Body Slam / Earthquake
- Gyro Ball
- Curse
- Flame Wheel

Torkoal is a perfect combination of powerful and bulky. I personally use a special attacking one, but if you need a physical Pokémon it can do both. Start off with a Curse or two to bulk up. Gyro Ball will be quite powerful after all that. Flame Wheel, without a Curse or two, is pretty bad. But with Fire Gem, STAB and some Curses, it's quite strong. Body Slam and Earthquake are just great moves to have.

The best set for Torkoal would be...

Torkoal @ Heat Rock
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Solar Beam
- Flamethrower
- Sludge Bomb
- Shell Smash

The Heat Rock is to extend the duration of harsh sunlight that is put in play by Drought.
Solar Beam is used in one turn thanks to Drought, and is to take care of its weaknesses.
Flamethrower is STAB and is powered up by Drought.
Sludge Bomb has good power and accuracy so why not?
Shell Smash gives it the potential to sweep due to it raising its already decent Special Attack and horrible Speed. Don't worry about it losing Defense, because it's already so high. Its Special Defense is already so low it doesn't matter.
Hope I helped! And good luck with your new Torkoal!

Gen 7 / Gen 8? (Physical)

Torkoal @ Maranga Berry
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 116 Atk / 140 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Flame Charge / Flame Wheel
- Shell Smash
- Skull Bash

Shell Smash boosts Torkoal's three attacking moves, and the Defense drop can be recovered thanks to the Maranga Berry and Skull Bash.

Torkoal @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 192 Def / 96 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Yawn
- Flamethrower
- Rapid Spin

Stealth Rock is always a good move to use, and works especially well with Yawn as your opponent usually swaps out when you use Yawn on them.
Sitrus Berry helps you stand a few Earthquakes from something like Tyranitar or Metagross, which means you could use Yawn on them and force a switch.
Rapid Spin clears hazards like Stealth Rock, which is a main threat to sun teams.
Flamethrower is strong STAB that gets a 1.5x boost in sun.

Gen 7 ZU

Torkoal @ Assault Vest
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rapid Spin
- Earth Power
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power [Electric]

Rapid Spin is for clearing hazards. Earth Power is coverage against rock types. Fire Blast is STAB. HP Electric is for water types.

Torkoal @ Heat Rock
Ability: Drought
EVs: 248 HP / 64 Def / 196 SpA
Modest Nature
- Solar Beam
- Body Press
- Rapid Spin
- Fire Blast / Lava Plume / Stealth Rock / Yawn

This set keeps the sun up forcefully. Solar Beam chunks Slowking (which gets Chilly Reception). Body Press can do a good amount to Tyranitar. Rapid Spin is utility. Fire Blast is just for damage, Lava Plume os less strong but has a higher burn chance. You can use Stealth Rock if you don't have Glimmora on your team, or Yawn because sleep is nice. It's not going to sweep or anything but it is pretty strong.

196+ SpA Torkoal Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Garganacl: 158-188 (39.1 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

64 Def Torkoal Body Press vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tyranitar: 296-352 (73.2 - 87.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

196+ SpA Torkoal Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking: 138-164 (35 - 41.6%) -- 71.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and poison damage

Gotta make a set for my tortoise.

Gen 9 OU Sun-Setter

Torkoal @ Heat Rock / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Drought
Tera Type: Water / Flying
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
- Lava Plume
- Yawn
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin / Earth Power / Solar Beam

Torkoal sets Sun up for allies such as Walking Wake and H-Lilligant to abuse. Yawn gives a safe switch for an ally or a free turn to set Stealth Rock. Lava Plume is STAB with a nice burn chance. Rapid Spin can clear hazards an opponent might setup to start the game, while Earth Power / Solar Beam are coverage. Tera Water is a good defensive typing. Torkoal can cover Tera Water weaknesses with Lava Plume and Earth Power. Tera Flying removes a Ground weakness. Heat Rock is to extend Sun, while Boots gives Torkoal more opportunities to set up Sun.

Teamates:

Walking Wake: Abuses Sun and can nuke opposing Rain teams
H-Lilligant: Abuses Sun and gives valuable Water coverage.
Corviknight: Corvi can Defog annoying hazards and swap in on potential Earthquakes.
Clefable: can support with item removal via Knock Off and give Wish support to heal Torkoal if he’s getting chipped.
