What is a good moveset for Kecleon?

5 votes

I know I skipped Claydol. I just wanted to do Kecleon cause I think this is a great moveset and I'm kind of proud of it. Mine is EV trained in Speed to alllow it to use Skill Swap first. It also holds the Quick Claw. It knows:

Skill Swap: I hate the ability Color Change. It is Kecleon's weakness. It also helps with the strategy I have.

Aerial Ace: Decent power, doesn't miss, deals with Fighting types. Makes the foe a Flying type my strategy.

Rock Slide: The foe is now weak to this. Used to deal with Flying types. Decent power, decent accuracy, good chance to cause flinching. Makes the foe a Rock type.

Brick Break: The foe is now weak to this. Used to deal with Rock types. Decent power, high accuracy, breaks through Reflect and Light Screen. The foe is now a fighting type and weak to Aerial Ace.

While this is a good moveset, it's also the most common and predictable moveset on Kecleon. Everyone will anticipate that Skill Swap, and probably just go all out to KO you in one or two hits. Do not fear! Just like with Shuckle, I have raised many Kecleon Specimens.

Firstly, you want a reliable STAB. The most reliable, of course, is Return. If the Happiness isn't quite there, then Slash is a great alternative.

Next, you'll want Substitute. Using Substitute will take out 1/4 of your HP, but is worth the free dummy hit. Also, use Substitute with prediction. If you feel the opponent is going to take a turn to buff or set up something, then activate the Substitute then.

Next, you'll want Focus Punch. Focus Punch and Substitute on Kecleon are like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Due to Kecleon's horrible Speed, he'll move last, and not have to worry about having its Substitute break the turn it makes it. Because of Focus Punch, you'll need a 2-turn charge. When your Sub is up, charge up your punch. The opponent will likely break your Substitute that turn, but because Focus Punch has priority, you get the charged attack first thing next turn. It's a flawless Focus Punch, and very few Pokemon can pull it off.

Finally, you'll want a filler. Probably something to hit Ghosts, seeing as Ghosts are immune to Return, Slash, and Focus Punch. Faint Attack or Shadow Claw will do. Sucker Punch is a risky alternative, but also gives priority. Pick the one you like best.

Kecleon's possibilities are nearly endless, since everything in its movepool can be used to its advantage. Shadow Claw and Skill Swap works wonders, this strategy is great, or a Special Wall set is even possible. This is my personal favorite, and it's great for survival too.

This is just about the same thing I was going to say. Therefore I will not be answering this question.
Great minds think alike, LOL.

I prefer your skill swap strategy even though I don't dislike your Sub-Punch strategy with two priority/revenge moves. Expert belt is a wonderful item choice for the first set even though you have to turn the SDef EVs into speed EVs.
Even with Speed EVs Kecleon is slow, plus it would harm the sub-punch strategy. Skill Swap is creative, but it doesn't pan out I have found, due to Kecleon's poor defenses. :)
For my living lvl 100 pokédex I can try raising both movesets... and then try them out.

Kecleon (M) @ Leftovers / Life Orb
Trait: Color Change
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Def
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Shadow Claw
- Seismic Toss / Drain Punch
- Thunder Wave
- Skill Swap

This is my version of the original poster. It uses the same principle, except it is slightly more efficient.
Thunder Wave and Skill Swap combo nicely, as you can slow the opponent down, then Skill Swap them as well as giving those Para-hax percentages. Ghosts are weak to themselves, so Shadow Claw hits Super effective over and over, rather than doing the rock, paper, scissors game and taking up 3 move slots.
Seismic Toss will always do 100 damage, often clearing away 1/3 of the opponents HP, as well as changing the opponents type to fighting if they are Normal, then they can be hit by Shadow Claw. Drain Punch does the same, but with recovery, and damage is not set.
Max EVs in Atk for offensive purposes, 301 Hp for other Seismic Tossers and the rest in Def, as it's speed sucks (Thunder Wave takes care of that), and it's SpDef is already respectable (typical Normal Type). The item is preference; survivability or destructibility? Your choice.

This is the current Kecleon I'm training up from my Sapphire ( Gotta do a lot of work )

description

Kecleon w/ Leftovers
Adamant Nature
EVs - 248 Atk, 100 Sp Def, 160 Hp

Sucker Punch ( Level 46. Gen IV )
Mega Kick ( Tutor, Gen III )
Hone Claws ( Gen V TM )
Drain Punch ( Gen IV TM )

As my profile noted, I'm taking a long break from PO, and I'm going to complete my pokedex for all of my games, ( 649 pokemon in my Unova dex will be filled .. ) and I'm going to give them competitive movesets and EV train them, give them items if possible, but most of them will probably have to share from my collection ^^

Anyway, the first pokemon I'm going to try to knock out it Kecleon.

His ev's are making him into a specially bulky pokemon, that hits hard with physical attacks.
Hone Claws gives you an accuracy boost and a power boost, getting one up makes a world of dif.
Mega Kick is STAB, high power, and accuracy is boosted by Hone Claws.
Sucker Punch is priority, works well with Hone Claws's attack boost, lets him priority sweep.
Drain Punch helps him live, gets a reasonable amount of Hp back, more and more depending on how much damage you do to your opponent. ( Hone Claws helps again! )

Kecleon
Kecleon @ Choice Band

Trait: Color Change

EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe

Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SpA)

  • Return
  • Sucker Punch/Shadow Claw
  • Drain Punch
  • Trick

Return is STAB with good neutral coverage.
Sucker Punch is priority and hits Ghost types and Psychics, but Shadow Claw can be used if you prefer to hit 'em safely.
Drain Punch hits Rock and Steel types for decent damage and gives healing.
Trick screws something up.
EVs are to outspeed Base 60s who don't invest in Speed.
