What's the point of a cherish ball?

Of course, it opens in a million bright flashes of colors? But is it for an event of some sort?

It is in fact for Events. It shows that the Pokemon that you have was in an event, because you cannot obtain it in-game legitimately.

Also, besides it being to hold Event Pokemon, it also means you cannot do anything global with it, whether it be a battle or trade.
