what is the purpose of soft reset?

A soft reset is when you save your game at an advantageous point and just reset the game if you mess something up, as the "reset" part implies.

This is handy with one time events like a legendary pokemon battle, where you only get one chance to catch the pokemon. Doing a soft reset gives you an infinite number of tries, in essence. The same idea could easily be applied for other situations too.

but why not hard reset? I've done hard reset since when I was in 1st grade and there were no prob
soft reset could be quicker.
my ds is in auto mode, so it it no much difference. It also takes 2-3tries to soft reset(for me)
