Question

Power, ultimate power. This guy is up there with the most powerful of legendaries (Mewtwo, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Lugia, Ho-oh, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, not the incredibly powerful Arceus.) He is there not for incredible stats (which it does have) but for great typing. Mine knows:

Magma Storm: High power, STAB, traps the foe.

Earth Power: Good power, high accuracy, chance to lower Sp. Def. Deals with other Fire types, other Steel types, and Rock types.

Dragon Pulse: Good power, high accuracy, deals with Dragon types.

Flash Cannon: Good power, high accuracy, STAB, chance to lower Sp. Def.

Heatran does not really have great typing. It has some good defenses but is 4x weak to ground moves... Earthquake is one of the most common moves used in battles.

Also Steel moves are not that great really, you don't get much type coverage.

I would go with:
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Dragon Pulse
- Stealth Rock or Explosion

I still love its many resistances, like all Steel types. Plus, the fact that it is also a Fire type makes it incredible to me. Can you give  a replacement for Stealth Rock and Explosion however? I don't use those moves.

Here is another Heatran option:

Eruption/Magama Storm/Flamethrower: Eruption is a special move that has high power, high accuracy, and STAB, but very few have it. Magma Storm has high power, STAB, and traps the foe. Flamethrower has good power, high accuracy, STAB, and a chance to burn.
Ancientpower: Decent power, high accuracy, chance to raise all of Heatran's stats.
Earth Power: Earth Power: Good power, high accuracy, chance to lower Sp. Def. Deals with other Fire types, other Steel types, and Rock types.
Flash Cannon: Good power, high accuracy, STAB, chance to lower Sp. Def.
