The perfect learnset for a charizard:

If it has solar power ability:

-air slash: STAB, may cause flinching, decent power, good accuracy.

-heat wave/flamethrower: STAB, good power, very good accuracy, powered up by solar power, flamethrower has better pp but heat wave can hit all opponents.

-solarbeam: very good power and accuracy, doesn't require 2 turns with solar power, great against rock types (due to the 4x weakness) and water types (2x weakness).

-counter/earthquake: counter would be great against a rock type causing an incredibly powerful counter-attack with double power, but only with a focus band/sash attached or rock moves could be lethal. And earthquake would be great agains electric types (2x weakness) and rock types too.
(earthquake might be a little better).

Item attached:
- if charizard knows counter, a focus band or focus sash should fit perfectly for a powerful combo.
- if not, leftovers can be good for restoring hp, charcoal to power (even more) up fire tipes, miracle seed to make solarbeam lethal, sharp beek to make air slash stronger, soft sand to increase earthquake's power, life orb, berries, etc.

Finally, iv's and ev's :
Personally, i'd rather train my charizard in special attack than in attack (knowing that solarbeam, heat wave, flamethrower and air slash are special), even though you should be aware of attack since charizard cannot learn a special ground-type move and earthquake is a fisical one. Also, instead of counter you can teach charizard superpower if you want to raise sp. atk. to it's maximum.
Speed is very important for a charizard, it must be pretty high. Train it.
The hp would probably require to be trained a little more, or instead raise defense more, if not rock-type attacks might, and will, be lethal.

Note: a charizard with solar power ability might be pretty rare, if don't have one, here could be a good learnset:

-air slash
-heat wave/flamethrower
-solarbeam
-sunny day

If you think electric types are uncovered, take the risk and, instead of one less turn of solarbeam, replace sunny day for earthquake.

The truth is there isn't a rule for this, everyone has it's own playing style and techniques. and every choice you take will be great if you train hard and wisely.

First post, sorry for the length :)
Hope this helps!

Charizard is a boss so why not give him a good set? I prefer a Special Sweeper.
Item : Charcoal
Ability: Blaze

252 Special Attack, 252 Speed, and 4 Defense.

Moveset : OUTRAGE - because it is amazing.
Flamethrower/Fire Blast - If you prefer more power or accuracy.
Air Slash - Easy Critical hits.
Focus Blast - for Rock types.

Hope this works out for you.

Mega Charizard Y @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 sp. attack, 252 speed, 4 def
Nature: Timid
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Dragon Pulse / Air Slash

I personally like Mega Charizard Y more than the X alternative. Even if it still has the 4x Stealth Rocks weakness, and Drought's usefulness has been almost completely axed, this Pokemon still has base 159 special attack and should not be underrated.

This set is like the Choice Specs Ninetales, abusing max power Fire Blasts and Solar Beams, but with more overall Super Effective coverage with Focus Blast and Air Slash. Dragon Pulse can also be used, but only if dragon types are feared in whatever tier this Pokemon ends up in.

This set really only works if you are using Charizard as a speed sweeper. Also I don't yet know if the mega evolutions are allowed in competitive battle yet.

Charizard @ Charizardite
Trait: Drought
EVS: 4 hp /252 s.atk/ 252 speed
nature: Timid (+speed/-attack)

Moveset:
Overheat (STAB)
Solarbeam (weakness coverage)
Roost /Flamethrower(healing as needed/lower power STAB that doesnt reduce stats)
Dragon Pulse (anti-dragon/coverage)

Given that the mega evolution for charizard in Y drastically improves its S. ATK and gives it the drought ability which increases the damage from fire moves and gets rid of the charge turn of solar beam it is ideal for those that want a charizard that quickly gets rid of opponents. Also makes it so you dont have to waste a turn on sunny day while the increased stat boost make up for the not using an item that increases those stats like the "choice items"

Well lucky for you Im the Charizard KING!!! I made alot of egg using charizard

So Charizard is one of the old classic But THE BEAST!XD This is what my Charizard knows
mines is a physical sweeper

Thunder Punch-To get rid of water type
Earthquake- Every one should know WHY! XP
Fire Punch- Good Stab +.5 bonus attack because of same type
Roost-If you dont want to make your Charizard Bye Bye get some rest.

I think Mega Charizard X is good with this class set because of tough claw dealing 33% more damage that make contact like punches. also I like to do is 252 on attack 126 on defense 63 on sp Def. and speed 63 Hope it helps.

Gen 6:

Role: Physical Sweeper!

Mega Charizard X @ Charizardite X

Trait: Tough Claws

EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 6 HP

Jolly Nature (+Spd, -Sp.Atk)

  • Dragon Claw / Outrage
  • Flare Blitz / Fire Fang
  • Shadow Claw / Arial Ace / Earthquake / Dragon dance
  • Dragon Dance / Roost

A pretty good Moveset for Mega Charizard X!
Dragon Claw and Flare Blits are both stab and gets the 30% Damage boost from Tough Claw ability, Shadow Claw also gets the Tough Claw Boost but its not STAB. Roost is for healing offcourse. Dragon Dance is Buff and then you could maybe choose and of the other 3 attacking moves!

I run 2 types of Charizard's. Physical and Special. Here is a moveset for each type.

Physical
Charizard@SalacBerry
Jolly Nature
252 Atk, 252 Spd, 4 Def
Arial Ace- Never Miss, Stab
Fire Punch- 100% accuracy, stab, good damage
Substitute/Earthquake- Use on a predicted switch only! EQ gives good coverage
Belly Drum- Maxes attack and activates Salac berry to raise speed and sweep

Special
Charizard@WiseGlasses/ Life Orb
Timid Nature
252 Sp. Atk, 252 Spd, 4 Hp
Air Slash: Good accuracy, chance to flinch
Roost/HP Ground: Roost if life orb, HP deals with rock and electric weakness
Fire Blast/Flamethrower: Damage or accuracy, your choice
Dragon Pulse: Deals with dragons which are always a problem

run acrobatics it is better after salac activates

this is a great lead, it will set up on common leads with SR and other entry hazards
Charizard (Malfoy)@
salac berry
blaze
adamant
92 hp 164 attack 252 speed
substitute
belly drum
fire punch
EQ/acrobatics
the salac berry is activated with sub belly drum combo + the HP EVs, like I mentioned earlier this thing messes up ferros, fortress, etc. Fire punch is stab and flare blitz will kill you. EQ is for rocks, heatran, basically anything resisting fire and weak to ground, or you can run acrobatics, because it is stab and you lost your item already. this 2HKOs a specially defensive rotom does around 80%. when behind a sub you take out rotom before it takes you out. This set demolishes everything!

Other than Brick Break, this is just standard. And brick break is pretty much useless anyway, unless you know you are going against a team that uses screens a lot

Charizard (M) @ Charizardite X
Trait: Tough Claws
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)

  • Subsitute
  • Focus Punch
  • Dragon Claw
  • Fire Punch

A fast physical SubPunch set. I would start with Substitute then use Focus Punch (Which will be powered by Tough Claws). Then do it again if your Substitute is broken. Dragon Claw and Fire Punch is for STAB + Tough Claws boost = Massive Damage.

charizardX
nature jolly
EV's 252atk 252spd(+spd/-satk)
-fire punch
-thunder punch
-roost
-dragon claw

one of the great things about this is it is unexpected charizard has respectable defenses and takes neutral damage to the water type they are probably switching in. with thunder punch (gen 5 move tutor move) getting a boost from tough claws it is great water bait, and comes out no worse for wear and if it does roost. dragon claw and fire punch both provide good tough claws boosted stab
