Intoduction

I am usually not a player of Ubers. I always kept myself out of it knowing I'd be terrible at it. It was about two months ago when I finally decided to hit the 'Look for a Battle' button in Ubers, and I don't regret it.

This is my first Ubers team, and is still probably one of my most successful teams. It has taken work and time, but it has climbed to 1782 on the ladder, and is almost ready to go into the top 500 on Showdown!.

The team itself was made around Lugia, one of my favourite legendary Pokemon from the old games and an insanely great wall and Toxic staller if you can use it well. It has 106 / 130 / 154 base Defences and a legendary ability in Multiscale, which makes it an amazing switch-in and a better option than Giratina-A who sports a Dragon weakness, leaving it prone to CB Zekrom's Outrage and other powerful Dragon attacks in the tier.

The team is not perfect of course, and I'd appreciate it if somebody could correct any problems they see with the team. The main thing I see is that it is incredibly unoriginal, as it contains a Pokemon that over 40% of teams use and a Pokemon that is used for priority sweeps, so that is one thing I'd like to fix.

Enough of that though. Lets begin. Please prepare for a giant wall of text. :D

Process & the team

The team started off with Lugia, an amazing wall that I wanted to use. This thing will gladly switch in on the most powerful attacks, such a Kyurem-W's Draco Meteor thanks to Multiscale, which helps it set a Substitute and Roost off damage while watching the opponent die a long and frustrating death from poisoning.

The next Pokemon I added was a hazard setter. If I remember correctly, this teamslot was once occupied by Counter Forretress (I will remind you of how amazing that thing is), however after playing a few battles, I realised that Ubers is a little too overwhelming for a little bug like him, so I swapped him for a classic wall that can function properly in both OU and Ubers - Ferrothorn. This thing provides Lugia with with key resistances to Arceus-Ghost's Judgement / Shadow Claw and Darkrai's Dark Pulse. It also assists the team with Spikes and Leech Seed that slowly absorb HP, and can help with the many OHKOs the team aims to get.

Clearly the team lacks an attacking Pokemon. And one of Ferothorn's biggest flaws is it's horrifying 4x Fire weakness to Rayquaza's V-create, Kyurem-W and Reshiram's Fusion Flare, et cetera et cetera. The easiest way to remove this crippling weakness is to add a Water type. And who is better for the job than Kyorge? This big fish will lands countless OHKOs on many threatening Pokemon like Genesect and non-Sash Darkrai, and provides rain support to lower Ferro's Fire weakness and overwhelm the tier with Water Spout. The main issue with Kyogre is its disappointing 90 Speed. So I added a Scarf to outspeed other Kyorge and kill them with Thunder or revenge kill things with Water Spout.

At this point, I wanted to add a physical attacker, simply because the pink eggs wall me and if Lugia went down I'd be in trouble. However, before I added a Pokemon that could fill such a role, I needed a status absorber that, with prediction, could save Kyogre from Dark Void or Ferrothorn from Thunder Wave. Since I had rain support, I thought, "why not try Manaphy?" This little fairy has an amazing ability Hydration, which heals it from all status problems that come its way, if it is raining. This little guy proves to be an excellent counter to Darkrai, Giratina-A, Lugia and defensive Dialga, who often run away giving me a free Tail Glow. Some people are also dumb and think I'm using a Lum Berry, and they even attempt to status me again. Great troll, great attacker who will flatten unprepared teams.

The next Pokemon I wanted to add was a beast. With a maximum of 438 Attack unboosted, Choice Band and decent bulk, this Pokemon immediately stood out as a great attacker. This Pokemon was Zekrom, the team's premier wallbreaker who sports a 4x resistance to electricity, which is vital when Thunder has infinite accuracy and three of your team members are weak to it. This makes it a good switch in on things like Specs/Scarf Kyogre locked into Thunder trying to get a kill on one of my Pokemon. Nothing likes an unresisted Outrage to the face.

The next Pokemon I added was Deoxys-Speed, who I wanted for fast Taunt support and a way to get more hazards up. However, it simply wasn't working well and was not a help to the team in terms of synergy. So I wanted a Pokemon that firstly could stop Arceus-Ghost from flattening Lugia and a Pokemon that wouldn't have an effect on my synergy at all. And the Pokemon that stood out here was Arceus, who is weak to just Fighting which is an uncommon type in Ubers apart from Focus Miss and Aura Sphere, which Lugia walls completely. It is easy to set a Swords Dance with Arceus' good bulk, and proceed to kill the opponents team with ExtremeSpeed. He is not walled by Ghosts though; he has Shadow Claw and Brick Break which provide it with good coverage. He will sweep teams easily late-game, and is a thread you should be prepared for, although it is very mainstream.

The team - a closer look

The character limit has screwed me, so the team is in the below answer. Everything together comes to roughly 9,500 characters.
I congratulate you if you've read everything so far.

Continued here.

This will be short; I don't want to recreate the character limit problem. As usual, this answer should not receive votes of any kind. If you would like to give a vote, please put it on the question itself.

Kyogre @ Choice Scarf

Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

  • Water Spout
  • Surf
  • Thunder
  • Ice Beam

The bringer of rain, and the destroyer of teams. Kyogre does not need Choice Specs to bring OHKOs to the tier, and 438 Special Attack makes that apparent. Water Spout if Kyogre is healthy, or Surf if my health is low. Thunder to remove other Kyogre and other Water-types, and Ice Beam to deal heavy damage to Groudon in sunlight and break the many Dragon- or Flying-typed Pokemon in the tier.

Lugia @ Leftovers

Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Def
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)

  • Toxic
  • Roost
  • Substitute
  • Whirlwind

Toxic staller, slightly more bulky on the special side than the standard set. Uses it's massive bulk and Multiscale to stall opponents away. Substitute is for use when it is about to force something out, then Roost off Substitute and Stealth Rock damage. Whirlwind is for Steel types it cannot deal with like Genesect, switching in another victim of poison. Also useful for ending the Extremekiller's sweep.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers

Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
IVs: 0 Spd

  • Leech Seed
  • Spikes
  • Thunder Wave
  • Gyro Ball

Leech Seed is for absorbing HP, and can help protect Ferrothorn from KOs. Helps Lugia who can switch in and speed up Toxic stall. Spikes is my preferred hazard in Ubers, as not much is weak to Stealth Rock really. Thunder Wave is to help Zekrom and Manaphy who are a little slow. Gyro Ball is so I'm not Taunt bait, and is from trolling Deoxys-S and Deoxys-D. Since Lugia has SDef covered, this Ferro focuses on Defence.

Manaphy @ Leftovers

Trait: Hydration
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

  • Grass Knot / Rest
  • Surf
  • Ice Beam
  • Tail Glow

Status absorber and special attacker that will flatten teams after a Tail Glow. Surf is STAB, and OHKOs most of what Kyogre does. Ice Beam is for Dragons who wall me otherwise and is something to hit Groudon if the weather happens to be sunny. Tail Glow increases mt Special Attack by three stages, and after that Surf will OHKO most unresisted Pokemon. Grass Knot is more coverage, but Rest is great for healing and abuses Hydration. Which one should I use?

Zekrom @ Choice Band

Trait: Teravolt
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)

  • Outrage
  • Fusion Bolt
  • Dragon Claw
  • Crunch

With its Choice Band and 100% accurate Thunder, it goes rampaging through the tier dealing heavy damage to about everything. Outrage and Dragon Claw are used according to whether the opponent has something that can absorb Outrage or not. Thunder is my go-to attack for simply dealing damage. Crunch is coverage, cleans up Deoxys-D.

Arceus @ Leftovers

Trait: Multitype
EVs: 252 Atk / 80 HP / 176 Spd
Adamant Nature

  • ExtremeSpeed
  • Shadow Claw
  • Brick Break
  • Swords Dance

Priority sweeper to top everything off. Shadow Claw is for Psychic and Ghost types, Brick Break is to cover a bit more and Swords Dance is to make sure I'm hitting hard on whatever happens to be my opponent. ExtremeSpeed I should not have to explain. EVs give me 401 HP, trolling Seismic Toss. Only flaw here is ExtremeSpeed's 8 PP, meaning it's sweeps can be ended if the opponent can live long enough.

That's it then. I'd appreciate any help with the team, I'm trying to get to 1900+, and right now it doesn't look like it'll happen.

I'd like to question the use of Thunder on Zekrom. Zekrom has both Bolt Strike and Fusion Bolt, both physical moves, in its arsenal and are boosted by its nature and by Band, whereas Thunder not only uses Zekrom's weaker attacking spectrum, but is weakened, due to running an adamant nature. If you plan an all-out physical attacker, replace Thunder for either Fusion Bolt (accuracy) or Bolt Strike (power; OHKO's a 252 / 252 lugia with mscale intact btw :P). If you plan a mixed attacker, go for Naughty nature, to still have a +Atk, yet not affect you Satk.
and while im at it, EQ is far superior to Brick Break, and should be the preffered option on Arceus, unless Dual Screens has become a thing in Ubers. Also, i'd suggest a lum berry > Lefties, since a +2 Shadow Claw will not ohko Giratina, and it will easily throw a will-o-wisp at your way. Iirc, standard EV spread for lum berry arceus is: 244 HP / 252 Atk / 12 Spd.

one last thing; even though your lugia is fine as it is, i suggest running The Great Wall ev spread smogon has... its name says a lot >.>

good stuff Fizzy :D
Speed creepers be creeping Zekrom. Good job on the team :)
Recover on arceus for brick break, brick break isnt much compared to STAB extremspeed and recover can keep it going longer. Bolt strike on zekrom like the other guy said. Recover on Lugia over roost so you dont lose your ground immunity.
Brick Break is actually important, it's the only thing he can use against Ferrothorn, a common sight in Ubers. E-Quake is an option against Ferro too.
I use Earthquake on my Arceus, 2HKOs Ferro with one Swords Dance up. Although normally on Ferrothorn if my Arceus is max HP i'll just set-up all of my SDances.

+2 252+ Atk Arceus-Normal Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Ferrothorn: 179-211 (50.85 - 59.94%) -- 85.94% chance to 2HKO
@Lb: Screw me, I thought Thunder was physical. /facepalm
Not sure about EQ, I'll give it a go. I was originally running Lum, but I found Manaphy better to use to kill Giratina. So I kept Lefties. I'll give it to him and try it again and see what i like better. I'll give Smogon's spread on Lugia a try too, I only used that spread on Lugia since Ferro is usually the physical-attack absorber. Thanks for that btw, idk how I screwed up Zekrom. :/
@Ryan39: Brick Break is for Steels, particularly Ferro as JarJar said. I have Lefties, and since after SD, Arceus OHKOs a lot of what it sees, Arceus shouldn't worry much about it. Also, changing to Recover on Lugia has its consequences too; Lugia loses its weakness to Electric and Ice on the turn it Roosts, so I prefer not to use Recover.
@MrK: I prefer Brick Break. No more silly Leech Seeds :D
The thing I find is that is Arceus is at Max HP then Leech Seed doesn't bother him, he can set up all four Sword Dances and then score a OHKO with EQ, gg with ESpeed after that.
Consider a Water Gem on Kyogre. Gem Spout lead rapes. OHKOs basically everything. Useful for Extremekiller leads.

I freaking love Manaphy, but it is darn frail.

Run a sash. This is so you can get a glow, Beam, and rest off the damage. Consider Energy Ball. Special. With a Glow and full SAtk EVs it can probably OHKO Groudon, and Sand Setters. Surf is STAB, but I'd ditch it for coverage. Speed is needed as Thunder and Bolt Strike rape it.

Manaphy @ Focus Sash
Trait: Hydration
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Tail Glow
- Rest
- Ice Beam
- Energy Ball

Other than that, and the Zekrom with Thunder, the team is looking solid. Nice job!
Sash is not preferred unless you are planning to use it on like the second turn, seeing as almost every Ubers team uses Deoxys-S, Ferrothorn, or some sort of hazards setter. based on my limited knowledge of Ubers. (Which is not high but I have played a couple of Ubers games.
Thanks Ninja, I'll try it out. :)
I find a Calm Mind set for Manaphy  much better. It allows it to out stall pretty much anything thats special including Kyogre. Its much more reliable and allows you to make full use of Rest. I tend to run Scald, Ice Beam, Calm Mind and Rest. Scald is used over Surf to help wear down any non Rest/Lum berry Kyogre which seems to becoming more common currently. It also helps wear down ferro as it switches in.
I'll give both sets a try tomorrow, I can actually see both working. Df is right about the Sash too, so I'll try Ninja's set with Leftovers too.
