If you have a good moveset for Mewtwo, post an answer below and upvote the best ones. Remember, this is for competitive movesets, not in-game. Ability, EVs etc should be included, and we encourage sets for VGC doubles as well as singles. Make sure to read all the guidelines here.

Ha, just realized almost all of these sets are almost the same.
sweeper evs, timid nature, wise glasses/choice specs

psystrike (stab and used to deal with special walls, more power than psychic)
shadow ball (ghosts)
aura sphere (darks and guaranteed hit)
recover/ice beam/calm mind

recover for healing, as this pokemon is quite fragile, ice beam to hit dragons and general coverage, or calm mind
This isn't relevant, but lol, Modest Castform's uninvested Weather Ball in sun OHKOs 252Hp/ 252Sp.Def Abombasnow. xD
Mewtwo @ Mewtwonite
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk/ 156 Spd/ 100 Def

-Psycho Cut
Mewtwo @ Mewtwonite Y/ Choice Specs
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 Def/ 252 Sp. Atk./ 4 HP
Ability: /Insomnia
Calm Mind
Ice Beam
Aura Sphere
Some of the move sets are different. (Mine!)

I love the movesets, but for mewtwo x, if you have Drain Punch wasting a move slot on recover is kind of dumb.

EVs: 252 S.Atk, 252 Spd, 4 HP

This whole ultra swag moveset is all self-explanatory. XD

Personally I don't understand why everyone is giving Mewtwo all coverage moves. This guy could set up as a tank and then sweep, I've sweeped entire teams

[email protected]
Ability: Pressure
Nature: Modest
EV's 252 SpAtk 252 Spd

Calm mind: Boosts special attack and special defense
Barrier: Gives the defense a force to be reckoned with
Psychic: The main go-to move
Aura Sphere: Will cover pretty much everything psychic can't hit and never misses

I've got a new approach. Role: Reluctant Mega.

[email protected]
Trait: Pressure/Insomnia
Nature: Bold
EVs: 252 Def, 252 HP, 4 Sp. Def
-Calm Mind
-Aura Sphere
-Shadow Ball

Set up with Calm Mind and let them think you're getting ready to sweep. If they switch to a threat then you're well covered, and can even choose to Mega Evolve if you feel you need more power. If not, then wait comfortably with a Sp. Def wall until you're 1 turn away from being KOed (2 if foe outspeeds/uses priority). Use Rest. Now Mega Evolve! When Insomnia kicks in, Mega Mewtwo Y will wake up with full health, boosted stats, and very surprised foe. Great surprise factor if you have another potential Mega on your team. Downside is that you don't get a psychic stab, and I would keep it that way :/ Good weakness coverage is more important on this set. Not my favorite Mewtwo set but definitely the best if you need a surprise!

answered by
Rest fails when used by a pokemon with Insomnia bro
@ RedXan
That is correct. But rest isn't used by a Pokemon with Insomnia in this set.  Mewtwo with ability Pressure uses rest, and then the next turn mega evolves to gain the ability Insomnia.  An already sleeping Pokemon with the ability Insomnia immediately wakes up.  So using rest becomes exactly like using a full restore.

I haven't quite come up with a moveset for Mewtwo without a Mega evolutionary stone, but I've been thinking about the strongest "Megas'" for quite some time. Here's what I came up with.

Mega Mewtwo X @ Mewtwonite
Trait: Steadfast
EVs: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 4 HP
Nature: Adamant
- Drain Punch
- Disable.
- Light Screen.
- Reflect.
Alternatives are Protect for Reflect, and Magic Coat or Calm Mind (in this case it does the same thing as Amnesia), for Light Screen.

Unfortunately, if you come across a ghost type, or a Pokemon resistant to Physical moves, you will have to switch out. I designed this to take on your average opponent, and for being able to take very little damage and heal, as well as getting STAB bonus, provided you being able to set up the defense boosters without taking irredeemable damage.

Mega Mewtwo Y @ Mewtwonite
Trait: Insomnia
EVs: 252 SP Attack, 252 Defense, 4 HP
Nature: Bold
- Psystrike
- Reflect
- Calm Mind
- Miracle Eye

This one is able to handle dark types, and can deal significant damage with it's STAB attack before your health runs out, and is also able to win against the psychic-type, special-attack-resistant, Pokemon because Psystrike is based off of defense in the same way as Psyshock, so it can overpower most of the psychic types, since they tend to have lower defense comparatively to most other Pokemon. However, it can't heal, a Ferrothorn troller would smoke it, and, even with an active Barrier, it's defense is still only 105 according to this very website.

I have recently joined the Pokemondb forum and hope to become a prominent
Pokèmon enthusiast (I use that word too much) in the Pokè-base, as well as the rest of the Pokèmon world!

Why did I get voted down?
It's a genuine answer that I worked a long time on.
It was downvoted because a.) both of them are pretty bad movesets (no offence, just being honest) and b.) you need Natures, EV and items to complete the set (I realise that some of these answers don't, but this is a very old moveset question and we have certain standards now that we didn't have before). If you satisfy these conditions it's like that the downvote will be removed or cancelled out.
Okay. Well, the items are pretty obvious, and the EVs I'll add.
Wait, did you edit it!?!
Obvious or not you should include them. Natures too please.

I edited to neaten it up and put it into an importable format. I took the pictures out because they slow down the page (I would have kept one but it'd be strange to have just MegaMewX and not Y e.e)

TL;DR: You need a lot of coverage, with baton passers to back mewtwo up.

Mewtwo with mewtwo x stone.
Adamant/Jolly nature
Evs: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Special Defense
Thunder Punch
Ice Punch
Psycho Cut
Drain Punch

Mewtwo with mewtwo y stone
Evs: 252 Special Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Defense
Modest/Timid Nature
Grass Knot for Arceus, MRayquaza, PGroudon, and PKyogre.

Mewtwo X only has one Pokemon who is Immune to all his attacks, shedinja, none that are hit not very effective by all, 235 hit normal by all attacks, and 564 that are hit super effective by at least one, some being the all powerful dragon types and things like mega garchomp and tyranitar.

Mewtwo Y also has one immune, but 3 not very effective, the magnemite line, 344 neutral, and 452 super effective.

An assault Vest could also work, but I recommend mega stones.

I have also found this set works well with two baton passers before it, Drifblim and Scolipede. Drifblim has this set

Bright Powder/Sitrus Berry/ Mental Herb
Timid/Jolly Nature
Evs: 252 Hp, 252 Speed, 4 Special Defense
Baton Pass
Substitute / Destiny Bond
This helps because the Evs for mewtwo go into attack/special attack and speed, not defense.

Speed Boost
252 Speed, 252 Hp, 4 Defense
Baton Pass
Substitute / Protect
Swords Dance
Agility / Iron Defense
This will help mewtwo sweep.
If you use mewtwo y, Scolipede will not work.
You need ambipom.
Magic Guard
252 Speed, 128 Special Defense, 128 Defense
Nasty Plot
Hone Claws for accuracy or Substitute for protection.
Baton Pass

The hone claws can be very helpful because blizzard and thunder have low accuracy.

Both Scolipede and ambipom need timid or Jolly nature.

You could also go with fire Punch on mewtwo x for shedinja, but I don't recommend it.
Focus Blast on mewtwo y instead of grass knot could work, but it depends.

After all this, Mewtwo only has a 1/3 chance of being hit by attacks, and can wall them out while still sweeping like a pro.

Hope I helped :3

Mewtwo @ Life Orb/Mewtwonite Y
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psystrike
- Ice Beam/Fire Blast/Calm Mind
- Shadow Ball
- Aura Sphere

Life Orb allows you to do a lot of damage if you already have a mega, and Mewtwonite Y allows it to mega evolve. Psystrike has massive power and damages the same way Psyshock does, but it has 100 base power versus 80. Ice Beam allows you to deal a good amount of damage to Groudon, Yveltal, ect. Fire Blast allows you to take on an Aegislash. Calm Mind makes it easier to sweep by boosting you already high Special Attack. Shadow Ball does a good amount of damage or KO's most Aegislash, but Fire Blast is better to take on a Specially Defensive Aegislash. Aura Sphere is coverage for dark types, and also Mewtwo outspeeds Darkrai, and can KO with Aura Sphere unless it has a Focus Sash, which can easily be dealt with if you have your rocks up.

Mewtwo @ Mewtwonite X
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Zen Headbutt
- Drain Punch/ Low Kick
- Ice Punch/ Power-Up Punch
- Recover

If you want to run a fully offensive Mega Mewtwo X, which I have, it works pretty well. Zen Headbutt is Psychic STAB, and it has a 20% chance to flinch, which can be useful. Drain Punch is a Fighting STAB move, and allows HP recovery. Low Kick allows you to deal more damage to Primal Groudon. Ice Punch deals with most of the Flying and Dragon types in Ubers, specifically Rayquaza. Power-Up Punch allows you to get a boost to your insane attack by killing weakened targets or setting up on something you wall out. Recover lets you regain HP.

Mewtwo @ Mewtwonite X
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Bulk Up
- Recover
- Drain Punch
- Zen Headbutt/Ice Punch

I won't go over the moves I repeated, because you can check up there for what they do. Bulk Up boosts your Attack and Defense. You can recover HP after using Bulk Up, and once you have enough boosts, you can sweep simply by KOing a slower target, taking a hit from a faster target then KOing back, recovering HP with Recover or Drain Punch, and so on.

Here's the best Mewtwo set
Psystrike (stab)
Aura Sphere (coverage)
Ice beam (Just a great move)
Shadow ball (coverage)

This moveset takes out the fighting, psychic and dark triangle. Aura Sphere takes out fighting, Psystrike takes outs fighting types and shadowball takes out psychic types. Ice beam just gets rid of flying and dragon.

You mean Aura sphere takes out dark?

I like:
- Psystrike: The best psychic attack + Special.
- Aura Sphere: Best fighting attack + Special.
- Recover: To regain health (important).
- Foul play or, Crunch (if can't find "Foul Play"): (Foul Play: 95 power, counters Ghost type Pokemons.) (Crunch: 80 power, counters Ghost type Pokemons, chance to lower foe's defense.)

Mewtwo Special Attacker
Item @Mewtwonite Y
Nature: Modest/Timid
EVS:252 SpAttack/252 Speed/4 HP

1.Shadow Ball (Ghost Coverage)
2.Aura Sphere (Dark Coverage)
3.Calm Mind (My set-up)/Recover (Heal)
4 Psystrike (100 accuracy, 100 power, 10 pp and STAB)

Item @Mewtwonite Y
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
EVS: 252 Attack/ 252 Speed / 4 HP

1. Psycho Cut (Main stab)
2. Brick Break (Dark Coverage)
3. Stone Edge (Bug Coverage)
4. Recover (Heal)

Id go with the Special Attacker because it has a wide variety of special move pulls. (Advice)

I would run Mewtwonite X over Y for physical, it benefits it MUCH more.

[email protected] Mewtwonite Y
Nature: Modest
Role: Special sweeper
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 128 SpAtk/252 spd/ 128 def
Psystrike- for all those stupid sp def tanks
Aura Sphere- can't miss and takes out annoying Dark types
Shadow Ball- for Ghosts
Flamethrower- coverage and takes out Bugs, especially Scizor

Nature: jolly (+spe, -spa)
EVs: 252 speed, 252 attack, hp
Item: Mewtwoinite X
Ability: steadfast
Move set
Brickbreak: STAB, nice power, good for dark types
Earthquake: Amazing power, just plain nice coverage
Bulk up: when combined with brick break, sweeps teams
Psystrike: STAB, amazing power, nice coverage
many Mewtwos are looked down upon because of his X mega evolution. But in this setup, brick break is the main move, and because of the jolly nature, Mewtwo can use bulk up 1-2 times, then sweep with brick break and earthquake. Psystrike may not be the best option, because of the -spa, but the STAB and high power can help as a last resort.

answered by
Replace Psystrike with Psycho Cut, Brick Break with Drain Punch, And Bulk Up with Poison Jab, as this set is Gen 6-7, and Mega Mewtwo Y gains a Fairy Type Weakness as it becomes part Fighting Type.  Poison Type moves are super effective on Fairy Types.

Mewtwo @ Life Orb
-Psychic (STAB)
-Ice Beam
-Aura Sphere/Focus Blast

With it's fast speed, it can TAUNT those pokes that relies on status move. With Taunt on this guy, you could prevent hazards, statuses, set ups and others! Aura Sphere give coverage to Dark-types, and if you want more power, use Focus Blast. The whole set gives the most type-coverage (that i've found)

answered by
I'd Replace Taunt, although I see why it can be useful, I personally would replace it with Shadow Ball, to cover it's Ghost type weakness.

Pokemon: Mewtwo
Item: Mewtwonite Y
Ability: Insomnia (because its a Mega Mewtwo Y)
EVs: 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Sp. Def / 4 Speed
Nature: Modest (+Sp.Atk -Atk)

-Aura Sphere: Coverage for Dark types, Takes out Ground types, Normal types, Ice types,Rock types and finally,
Steel types.

-Psychic/Psystrike: Great powers, STAB moves

-Shadow Ball: Takes out Ghost types and other Psychic types

-Calm Mind: RAISES SP.ATK AND SP.DEFENSE?? YES, OF COURSE!!! (Just use this move at least 3 times and you're pretty much a beast now :3).

Mega Mewtwo Y is supposed to be a Sweeper, not a Wall.

My Mewtwo that I use to sweep battles clean of opposition. :)

Mewtwo @Mewtwonite Y

Shiny: Yep

Pressure (Will Have Insomnia after mega evolving.)

Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)

IV's: 31/31/31/31/31/31 (Hidden Power Dark)

EV's: +252 SpA, +252 Spe, +4 Def

The Moveset - I know this moveset is basically the standard moveset, but here it is. Below the moves I will tell you an explanation on why.

-Aura Sphere, to Cover up the Dark Type weakness, as it is the most useful Special Type Move, as it never misses, and is far more useful than Focus Blast.

-Shadow Ball, to cover up it's Ghost type weakness, as Ghost types are immune to Fighting type moves such as Aura Sphere and Psychic type moves are not effective against Ghost types other than Gengar and Marshadow.

-Psystrike, as it has more power than Psychic, and is basically Mewtwo's signature move, and it is a more powerful version of Psyshock, as it deals damage to the opposing Pokemon's Defense stat, yet the default damage is based on Mewtwo's Special Attack Stat. This is used to control Fighting and poison type Pokemon at hand.

-The last move is interchangeable, as you can use any preferrable move here. I personally use Ice Beam in the fourth slot to cover many types, primarily it's Bug type weakness. You could also use Recover to heal itself, Thunderbolt for type coverage, Energy Ball also for type coverage, or basically any useful move here.

Mewtwo is made to be a Special Sweeper, and is clearly designed by Game Freak to be a counter to Darkrai, as Mega Mewtwo Y's Maximum Speed Stat, with 31 IV's in Speed and A beneficial nature to speed, has 416 speed, while a Darkrai EV Trained for speed and has 31 IV's in speed, has a speed stat of 383. To further add to the claim of that Mega Mewtwo Y is a counter to Darkrai, Mega Mewtwo Y's Ability is Insomnia, as it cannot be put to sleep by Dark Void, and Mewtwo learns Aura Sphere, and one of the type weaknesses for Dark type Pokemon is Fighting type moves.

Yeah I know I might be typing an essay, but this shows why Mega Mewtwo Y is superior to Darkrai, and what moves to choose for your mutant Mew. Time to sweep those Darkrai's away!

Pokemon: Mewtwo
Item: Mewtwonite Y

Modest Nature

  • Psystrike
  • Aura Sphere
  • Ice Beam

For both Mega Evolution

Held Item: Mewtwonite X/Y
Ability: Pressure--->Steadfast (X)/Insomnia (Y)
Nature: Naive (+Speed, -Sp.Def)
EVs: 204 Speed, 153 Attack, 153 Special Attack

  • Psystrike
  • Aura Sphere
  • Drain Punch/Shadow Ball
  • Recover

Just like Charizard, Mewtwo has two Mega Evolutions, and there's something common in them: The Mega X stats are spreaded much more equally, making them possible physical attackers, while the Mega Y stats are closer towards a special sweeper's stats. Psystrike is an epic STAB move with its 100 power and accuracy (or as I called, Mewtwo's Earthquake), Drain Punch also provides STAB for Mega X, some recovery and makes its Attack stat useful, however, you need to transfer into OR/AS/US/UM to teach it from a Move Tutor. For Mega Y, rather use Aura Sphere to deal with Dark types, and Shadow Ball against Ghosts. And why do you need Recover? The answer is in the move's name. :D

Mewtwo is one of the original Ubers of Pokemon, being a gen 1 Pokemon, and being in Ubers since the dawn of Pokemon. Why? Mewtwo, is an extremely versatile Pokemon, and has amazing stats. With the Mega Stones, introduced in Pokemon X and Y, as Mewtwonite X and Y, further reason for it's justification in Ubers. I run Both Mega Mewtwo X AND Y. Mega Mewtwo has one of the best Attack stats in all of Pokemon, and that is what I will be focusing on. Mega Mewtwo X is weak to Ghost, Fairy, and Flying Moves. It isn't weak to Dark, as it is part Fighting. This Mega Pokemon is very versatile, and can be a mixed, special (not advised), or physical sweeper.

This is the move set I am satisfied with, and currently use on my Pokemon X Battle Box Team...

  • Mewtwo @ Mewtwonite X (You Could also use Mega Mewtwo Y as a sweeper too!)

  • Jolly Nature (394 Speed)

  • Perfect 6iv (BTW Hidden Power Dark)

EV Spread: +252 ATK, +252 SPEED, +4 SP DEFENSE.

  • Drain Punch, To regain HP and Counter Dark type Ubers, like Darkrai, which is extremely common in Gen 6 Ubers. Due to Mega Mewtwo X being Psychic - Fighting, Drain Punch gets STAB.

  • Ice Punch, for type coverage, and countering Flying types. Oddly enough, it freezes Pokemon often enough to help me win.

  • Psycho Cut, STAB, and Crit chance. I use this over Zen Headbutt, as it has good Accuracy, buy Zen Headbutt has flinch chance.

  • Poison Jab To counter pesky Geomancy Xerneas with Power Herb, a common pest in Ubers. Poison Jab also has 30% Poisoning chance.

Stone Edge, Zen Headbutt, Aqua Tail, Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Bulk Up, Aerial Ace.

Remember that Mewtwo in general is an extremely versatile Pokemon.

I wish that Mewtwo got a physical Dark or Ghost move. Foul Play isn't useful. I wish it got Knock Off, which is actually useful.

Mewtwo is one of the best sweepers ever :)
