Thread Information

On this thread, you can post suggestions as to what tournaments should be hosted on the site! When you post suggestions, please make sure that you include all rules that will apply to your tournament and the amount of members in it. The most popular tournaments, determined by those with the most votes, will be hosted next. Old and not-so-popular suggestions will be hidden over time to prevent clutter.

Please check through the existing answers and the tournament winners pages linked above to make sure your suggestion hasn't already been made.

Take note that these tournaments will not be hosted on the 3DS (or a Switch or whatever fancy gadget you're using nowadays), but on a Pokemon simulator called Pokemon Showdown. Also if you have a new suggestion that has not been suggested, post it and see if it gets support!

Please read the selected answer (the first answer you'll see) for additional information.

Thanks for the info
Ok, so signups begin June 16th or does the tournament begin June 16th? If so, when are signups? I can't signup Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Read the original post. If you don't see your answer, then read it again.
Got it. Just making sure.
The new “seasonal format” is twice a season, right?

Bonus Type Tourney :3

This will probably need a custom format (or 2) on the Pokemon Database Showdown! server :P

Thought this up when I was bored.

  • Every pokemon gets an additional type of your choice. (can be a type the Pokemon you choose already is, because then you A) stay the same type, and B) get a Slightly wider movepool)

  • The Pokemon can learn moves of that type you chose from the list below VVV

  • If a Pokemon is dual typed and gets a type other than it's own picked, it is a tri-type (has 3 types).

  • Will have 2 formats (depending on what the host chooses) OU Bonus Type (uses OU Pokemon, has banlist)/Ubers Bonus Type (uses Ubers Pokemon)

The banlist is for the OU like format; all of these can be used in the Ubers one, however.

Mega Pinsir + Extreme Speed

Dark Type Gengar

That's all I can think of, comment any more that could be banned, and why
You can also suggest changes to the movelist

Hope you like this...

Guys. M sceptile + bug type  + felll stinger = OVERPOWERED SCEPTILE OMG REKT LOLOLOL SUCH WIN VERY SWAG MLG!!!!
How are the formats going to work when this tournament really happens? How will we know when to play OU and when to play Ubers? Also, how exactly did you choose the moves on this list? It seems to be random, with completely broken moves like trick-or-treat mixed with completely useless moves like nightmare.
I read something once about being able to add custom formats on servers (in this case the database server) and If it got enough upvotes, maybe Pokemaster could add it to the server.

OU/Ubers could be chosen by the host/The theoretical polling system or whatever that builds hype for tournaments.

The moves where supposed to be Usable but not too OP; just to allow the pokemon to get STAB. I wanted to avoid Dragon Dance/Quiver Dance/Etc. to not grant any Pokemon that power, as well as disallowing signature moves (with a few acceptions). You can also suggest move changes; that was just a general idea of what I believed was acceptable. I was using this list (going through each type category)

@LeafyBlade, Mega Sceptile will go down with its x4 Ice and Bug Weakness, and it is now weak to Fire :P
But, but...... I have 11 types
In that case, can you please ban sticky web and trick-or-treat? They are too OP.
Done :P
What happens if Ditto/Smeargle participates?
exactly what the answer says will happen

This is sort of like PX's tournament, but with a twist.

So, you start out with any Pokemon that you want that at least has one weakness. Then, you have to use a Pokemon that is a type super-effective against the previous Pokemon you chose.

For example, let's say I start with Swampert. Now, I have to use a Grass Pokemon. I could add in Whimsicott. Then, it goes on and on until the last pokemon.

Standard OU Rules.
All Pokemon must have a weakness.
Showdown clauses.
16 participants.
Save replays of the match.

Dancing Tourney (a.k.a The Miror B. Tourney)

This tourney is pretty simple. You must have pick a Pokemon that has at least one of these moves in their movesets:

Dragon Dance
Feather Dance
Fiery Dance
Lunar Dance
Petal Dance
Quiver Dance
Rain Dance
Revelation Dance
Swords Dance
Teeter Dance

Standard OU rules.
Showdown clauses.
16 participants.
Save replays of the match.
Keep the same tourney team for all your matches. (debatable)
No switching out. Pokemon need to dance until their last breath! (debatable)

Pokemon Banlist:

Optional: Have a Ludicolo on your team.

edited by
Lmao Oricorio = OP plz nerf

Also, Ludicolo can’t learn any dancing moves. Are you making an exception just for Ludicolo?
Ludicolo can learn Rain Dance and Swords Dance by TM.
Oh yeah nvm
ETN’s right. Oricorio should be banned (I could be wrong).
Is it because of it's ability? Because if so, I understand. Quiver Dance Oricorio...oh the horror...
Yeah. Wait, do the Pokémon need to actually have the move or just be able to learn it?
They have to have the move in one of their moveslots.
Ok thx. I thought so.

My Pokken Tourney idea was very successful, so let's try this!

Hi, I'm eXcess. Today, I'd like to introduce you to a new PokémonDB tournament idea:

Pokemon + Smash Tournament

As you may know, Super Smash Bros. is an action game about smashing beloved game characters off the screen. Many Pokémon have appeared in this series, whether as fighters or from PokéBalls. I'm sure you are all eager to find out who will be joining this tournament. So I made a list to showcase some Pokémon appearing in the tournament. Please take a look!

Eligible Pokémon

Fighters: Charizard, Greninja, Ivysaur, Jigglypuff, Lucario, Mewtwo, Pichu, Pikachu, Squirtle, Ice Climbers

PokéBalls: Abra, Arceus, Articuno, Beedrill, Bellossom, Bewear, Blastoise, Bonsly, Celebi, Chansey, Charizard, Chespin, Chikorita, Clefairy, Cyndaquil, Darkrai, Dedenne, Dialga, Deoxys, Ditto, Eevee, Electrode, Entei, Alolan Exeggutor, Fennekin, Gardevoir, Genesect, Giratina, Gogoat, Goldeen, Groudon, Gulpin, Hitmonlee, Ho-oh, Inkay, Jirachi, Keldeo, Koffing, Kyogre, Kyurem, Latias, Latios, Lugia, Lunala, Manaphy, Marill, Marshadow, Melloetta, Meowth, Metagross, Mew, Mimikyu, Moltres, Munchlax, Onix, Oshawatt, Palkia, Piplup, Porygon2, Pyukumuku, Raikou, Scizor, Snivy, Snorlax, Solgaleo, Spewpa, Starmie, Staryu, Suicune, Swirlix, Togepi, Torchic, Unown, Venusaur, Victini, Vulpix, Alolan Vulpix, Weavile, Weezing, Wobbuffet, Xearneas, Zapdos, Zoroark

Note: Pokémon that appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate may participate

Note: Evolutions may participate

That's right! Every Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. history is joining the battle. Indeed, absolutely every Super Smash Bros. Pokémon ever is in this tournament, whether they are fighters or Pokémon that appear in PokéBalls. I believe this is what DB users want, so I made the impossible possible. Anyway you slice it, this has the most Smash for your signup post. Simply put, this is the biggest tournament in DB history. Once again, DB users will collide.

Jokes aside...(for now)

Other Info

To make this feel like an actual Super Smash Bros. tournament, this tournament will be double-elimination. Basically, Round 1 winners proceed to the winners bracket, and losers will proceed to the losers bracket. That way, if you slip up or have an unlucky game, you won't be knocked out of the tournament completely. For more information, go here. That being said, a participant total of 8, 16, or 32 is preferred.

As of now, this tournament will use the Uber format. However, if other users prefer OU, I can alter the eligible Pokemon list accordingly. Nonetheless, Smogon bans and clauses will apply.

Note: You do not have to have a fighter on your team. Teams made up of all PokéBall Pokémon are acceptable.

Here is a summary of the rules for your viewing pleasure:

  • You can only use Pokemon that have appeared in a Super Smash Bros. game (trophies don't count)
  • If an eligible Pokemon is an NFE, that Pokémon's evolution(s) is allowed
  • Double-elimination bracket tournament
  • 8, 16, or 32 participants
  • Will take place in the Uber format
  • Red Orb is banned (debatable)
  • Blue Orb is banned (debatable)
  • Normal Smogon bans and clauses apply

Before I go...

I hope you are excited as I am. I will continue working hard updating this post until the tournament starts. I really appreciate your upvotes. I made including every single Super Smash Bros. Pokémon ever my number one goal, so I was kind of hoping you weren't excepting too many eligible Pokemon. However, due to the upcoming release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, new Pokemon will join the battle!

edited by
Corrected a minor error.
Ahh, how could I forget Ice Climbers?
Did you know Solgaleo and Lunala will join the game?!
Yeah, as well as some others like Alolan Exeggutor (however you spell it), Abra, and Bewear. I should probably skim the Direct and add those Pokemon. I also forgot Genesect ;-;
I have a question, do with evolutions everything similar to that count? Like mega-evolutions and alolan/non alolan Pokémon?
You can mega evolve anyone you want, but I’ve decided to seperate Alolan and normal forms because in SSBU, some Pokemon appear in only their Alolan forms and vice versa.

Type Sabotage Tournament (is the name good enough now?)

This is a single elimination, best of 3 tournament. Whenever a person loses or forfeits a battle, that person picks a type. Whoever just beat that person cannot use that type of Pokemon in the rest of the tournament, including any remaining battles in the round. If the loser becomes unresponsive, then the host randomly picks the type.

Because this is single elimination, when signups close the participants will get reduced to a (integer) power of 2. So the first 16 signups play if 17-31 people sing up, the first 8 signups play if 9-15 people sign up, etc. Signups will cap at 2^(number of types/2) (currently 512) because beating any more people will lock up every type.

The Type: Lock Tournament.
I think I came up with a better name.

So I'm actually surprised that nobody selected a
Balanced Hackmons Tournament!

It's a tournament in Balanced Hackmons. Any Pokemon (even AG), and:
Pokémon may not have the following abilities:
Arena Trap
Huge Power
Innards Out
Magnet Pull
Parental Bond
Psychic Surge
Pure Power
Shadow Tag
Water Bubble
Wonder Guard

Primal Groudon is banned.

Also, you can use Megas, and Alternate forms without their required items!
For instance, Mega Beedrill doesn't need to hold Beedrillite, and Ultra Necrozma doesnt need to hold Ultranecrozium Z, nor does it need a base form.

Have fun!

Gengarite is also banned in Balanced Hackmons. :P

I've seen variations of this go pretty okay on Smogon, so
Ubers Ban-happy Tournament
This starts as an Ubers tournament, but every time someone signs up or wins a battle, they bans one Pokemon*, move, ability, or item. The bans become effective at the beginning of the next round, and people can discuss and edit their bans until they become effective. I think each round should last at least 2 weeks in case players want to test their new teams.

*except Arceus. If someone wants to ban Arceus, then they needs to ban it one form at a time.
Also this should be obvious, but no voting on bans because that kind of defeats the purpose of the tournament.

edited by
could I sign up just to ban something?
yes (6 characters)

Hmmm...The Item Moveset Tourney!
The game is you pick something, Detectives, Criminals, Movies, Etc. and you have to make a Moveset based off that!
For example, if you have a Beauty Team, you could have
Dazzling Gleam

After you're defeated, you tell the other person what you got your team from. He/She can either choose to leave his/her team the same, or change it to your team.

OP Legendaries

OP Megas

edited by
Not all legendaries and Megas need to be banned. Just make it standard OU rules, that gets rid of anything that's overpowered. And unless it's part of the tourney's theme, I see no reason to ban items.
I love how "Flash" is a beauty move.

Evil Magikarps

I know this seems weird, but it may be fun. Every team consists of 6 Magikarps. The twist is that you can add any move. It will be a 16 player championship. Once all your Magikarps are defeated, you are out of the tournament.

Two people are randomly chosen. The loser gets DQ, and the winner gets paired with another random opponent. This is repeated until there is only one person left, who is crowned the winner.

  • Grass and Electric type moves are banned
  • Rain Dance and Sunny Day are the only usable status moves (debatable)
  • Moves that have less than 8 or more than 32 PP are banned (debatable)
  • Moves cannot exceed 75 damage (debatable)
  • Each Magikarp must have at least 1 physical and 1 special moves
  • Magikarp's Revenge is banned (debatable; it is a funny move that I would love to see in action. If it is allowed, only one Magikarp can have it.)
  • You cannot use items that restore HP (debatable)
  • Magikarp that have the ability Swift Swim cannot have Rain Dance
  • Magikarp can only have it's regular and hidden abilities.
  • Transform, sketch, and mimic are banned.
  • You can only change the HP EVs/IVs. (debatable)
  • OHKO moves are banned
edited by
Why those types of moves?
I tried ti think of the evilest typings there are. That narrowed it down to only Dark, Ghost, Poison, Fighting, and maybe Steel/Bug.
I think it'll be better if they weren't limited to evil-seeming types. You should still ban grass and electric moves, though.
What about status Grass/Electric moves?

This is probably the weirdest tournament idea I'll ever have that isn't based on an anime.

Smeargle Tournament
This will be single elimination done in Anything Goes of the latest generation. It will clauses of whatever the lowest tier Smeargle is allowed in, with the following changes.

  • Species clause doesn't apply.
  • All Pokemon on a team must have visibly different nicknames. For example, one team can't have a Pokemon nicknamed "Smeargle" with an L and a Pokemon nicknamed "SmeargIe" with an i.
  • The only Pokemon species allowed is Smeargle.

Since the clauses aren't enforced automatically (we could do custom game, I guess), anyone who breaks them should be disqualified.
I have been expecting you to make this pun since before I posted this answer. That's because I can do a bit of mind reading. I may be sounding kind of sketchy here, but I can assure you it's true.

What an artistic description.
Dang. Didn't see that one coming.

There are lots of Pokemon that are designated "Uber" but are really bad in Uber, so I thought this idea might make them a little less forgotten.

Ubers UU Tournament
All Uber bans and clauses apply.
All Pokemon that are banned from OU and get more than 3.406367107% usage in Uber are banned. This will be based on the lastest, highest ladder Uber usage statistics on . The source of the statistics is debatable.
If a Pokemon species is below Ubers, has more than 3.4% usage in Ubers, is used more than 50% of the time with a certain ability or move, and that ability or move is banned in OU, then that Pokemon with that ability or move will be banned. For example, if Gothitelle was PU, got 4% usage in Ubers, was used with shadow tag 99% of the time, and shadow tag was banned from OU, then shadow tag Gothitelle will be banned. However, both frisk Gothitelle and shadow tag Wynaut will still be allowed in this example case.

As of May 2018, these Ubers Pokemon are "OU" and therefore not allowed.
primal Groudon, dusk mane Necrozma, Yveltal, Xerneas, Marshadow, ground Arceus, fairy Arceus, mega Salamence, primal Kyogre, Arceus, Ho-Oh, mega Gengar, water Arceus, origin Giratina, mega Lucario, Rayquaza, speed Deoxys, attack Deoxys, Lunala, Lugia, mega Mewtwo Y, dark Arceus
These non-Ubers Pokemon are banned when they have a certain move or ability.
Zygarde with power construct
These Ubers Pokemon are "UU" and therefore allowed. (most of them are probably still not viable, though)
Aegislash, fire Arceus, electric Arceus, grass Arceus, ice Arceus, fighting Arceus, poison Arceus, flying Arceus, psychic Arceus, bug Arceus, rock Arceus, ghost Arceus, dragon Arceus, steel Arceus, Blaziken, mega Blaziken, Darkrai, Deoxys, defense Deoxys, Dialga, Genesect, Giratina, Groudon, Kangaskhan-Mega, Kyogre, Kyurem-White, Landorus, Metagross-Mega, Mewtwo, mega Mewtwo X, Naganadel, Necrozma-Dawn-Wings, ultra Necrozma (only if it wasn't dusk mane to start) Palkia, Pheromosa, Reshiram, Shaymin-Sky, Solgaleo, Zekrom
These Pokemon will likely be good in this tournament despite not being in the Ubers tier.
Smeargle, Ferrothorn, Magearna, Excadrill, Ditto, mega Diancie, Cloyster, Chansey, mega Sableye, Blissey, Tapu Lele

The Sumo Tornament!!!

Inspired by Episode 194 of Pokemon Anime, this will be a "sumo" competition, with all contact moves.

  • Standard OU clauses/bans
  • Pokemon must weigh more than x amount of lbs.
  • Only contact moves can be used, with (optional) one protecting or stat-boosting status move per Pokemon.
  • Final Gambit is banned.
  • Rocky Helmet is banned.
  • (Optional) Sturdy and Focus items are banned.

If there are any rules that there should be, comment below!

Would contact moves include things like Grass Knot? Or would only moves that use a part of the body be allowed?
All moves that are contact (including special ones).

Have you ever cursed your luck for making you suck at team building, but cursed your luck even more when you played Battle Factory and got six level 19 Wishiwashis? If that's you, then you're in luck, because one day, you can play the
1/6 BF, 5/6 OU Tournament

single elimination
All battles are done in (singles) OU.
Before each battle, each participant is forced to use a random Pokemon (along with form, if the species has forms that are tiered separately).
That Pokemon is revealed to everyone, which means participants can try to build teams that counter their opponent's team.
If a participant is assigned a mega evolution, then the participant can't use mega stones that weren't assigned to him/her/it.

This is how I will weight the random Pokemon generator, and how one of you should if this tournament gets hosted while I'm inactive.
Go to .
Click on the most recent date.
Find the OU statistics from the most recent generation. Be careful when doing this, as sometimes "ou" will refer to Generation 20 OU and Generation 21 OU is listed as "gen21ou".
You should see something that looks kind of like this:

Click the file that has the greatest number after the hyphen. In this case, it would be gen69ou-1825.txt.
Ignore all the stuff whose usage % is less than 1-(1/2)^(1/20), or about 3.4%.
Total the usage %'s of the remaining Pokemon.
Go to .
Generate a random number between 1 and the total, inclusive.
Starting from the top of the usage stats file, subtract usage %'s from the random number until the difference goes below 0.
The result is the Pokemon that made the difference go below zero.

Kill Count Tourney!!

This is just an OU tourney, but the catch is how you win. Instead of using the usual tournament ladder; where you win each round by winning to your assigned opponent then continue to the next round, or lose and you can no longer compete, this tourney will be based on how many of your opponents' pokemon you fainted. Most faints is 1st place, while least faints are last place. Depending on the size of people who joined, each player must battle 2 or more opponents.
- As said above, each player must battle 2-4 (maybe more?) or more opponents depending on how many joined. Participants must fight the equal amount of opponents as other players, so it's best that matchmaking is made prior to the battles
- Obviously OHKO moves are banned
- OU rules
- It still counts if an opponents pokemon faints indirectly or by itself (eg. poison or explosion)
- If 2 players have equal kill count they will have another battle. Whoever wins gets above the other player in rank however this will not count to kill count.

Battle of the Champions!

In this tournament, your team will have 6 Pokemon(obviously). Each Pokemon must be a champion's Pokemon. Each champion's Pokemon will represent different generations each. For example, your team may look like: Blastiose, Dragonite, Metagross, Garchomp, Volcarona, and Gardevoir. There are a few rules and disclaimers.

  • You may choose any champion from a specific generation, but not both. For example, you may choose between one of Alder's Pokemon or one of Iris's Pokemon for the Gen5 slot.
  • All champions you choose represent the generation they are originally from. For example, you cannot have Wallace's Milotic and Steven's Claydol on the same team. Steven is not from Gen6 but from Gen3.
  • The tournament will take place in the Uber format on Showdown!
  • Z-Crystals are banned
  • All mega stones are banned EXCEPT Gardevoirite and Metagrossite.
  • Nickname your Pokemon by the champion they represent.
  • I am unsure whether N is considered champion. Respond in comment section below.
Where's the fun in playing a format where Chansey is banned?
Why? Other tournaments, such as the previous one, don't use Chansey.
He’s being facetious.
Exactly. So it wasn't fun. I played it only because I was wondering if I could win.

Locked-In Tournament

This tournament is an old one me and my friends use to play back in HG/SS, but could still be relevant. The premise is that if you switch out, you are disqualified. Also, moves, items, and abilities that switch out pokemon are banned. It is like a cage match.

It will be played in gen 7 OU, so:
All standard OU smogon rules apply
The moves U-Turn, Volt Switch, Parting Shot, Whirlwind, Roar, Circle Throw, Dragon Tail, and Baton Pass are banned.
The abilities Wimp-Out and Emergency Exit are banned.
The Items Red Card and Eject Button are banned.

Save replays, switching out will result in disqualification. This is a standard bracket tournament.

Edit: Acupressure, FEAR, and Perish Song are also banned. Only one Pokemon can have destiny bond.

edited by
what is acupuncture?
My computer auto-corrected a misspelled Acupressure as Acupuncture.
Really useful Suggestion: Ban Truant, so people won't be able to entrainment truant using Durant, then they will let Durant to faint and use any pokemon with Belly drum/Tail glow, cosmic power,  protect and baton pass. Then they will baton pass all stats to a pokemon and sweep. Also, ban perish song.
Baton Pass is already banned. What you said is semi irrelevant. I will consider banning Truant, though :P

well no saying this thread is closed so:

starter tourement
OU bans apply
no FEAR {so no treekos with endeavor quick attack}
between 10 and 30 people
megas allowed
no monotype allowed
You can only use starter pokemon
No speed boost orbattle bond
pls choose

edited by
Please ban speed boost and battle bond.
That makes sense, but is Battle Bond Greninja really too good to be allowed? I prefer Protean Greninja...
The guys on Showdown! use battle bond more often than protean, and the guys on Smogon rank Ash Greninja higher in OU than regular Greninja.
Yeah, otherwise Battle bond and speed boost would be on every team :P
I banned battle bond and speed boost

CAP Tourney

Simple, all battles must be in CAP/CAP LC Formats.

  • Smogon Rules apply.

  • Single elimination bracket tournament.

Banlist: None (unless I see a reason to do so)

I just really wanted a tourney that uses the CAP format in it's basic form (and because it's my new main format) :P

I like it.
why are you all of a sudden obbsessed with CAP?
You "liked" it, but didn't upvote it. Nobody likes a legalist eXcess (I'm jk I know what you mean but seriously more people should upvote this.)
Very well. I shall upvote.

Annoying Ditto tourney!

I tried this out, it is really hard. So I'll give a list what to do:

OHKOing Ditto is not allowed. Unless you fainted one other Pokémon. If you do so, you'll lose.
AG (I wanna see what people are gonna do)
Ditto needs to be in front of the team

That were the rules! And I think everyone could signup in here!

So everyone must start battles with Ditto?

The Half Potential Tourney

OU Format, Everything is normal except:

  • Each pokemon can only have up to 93 IVs total
  • Each pokemon may only invest up to 256 EVs maximum
  • Each pokemon can only have 2 moves (Debatable)
  • You may only use up to 3 pokemon

I can’t think of any more rules now I’ll edit some more in later

edited by
Can you make it 256? I really want that one extra point.
Do two moves because its "half the potential". Also what about half the team?
good idea i edited than in
Why does everything have to be normal? There are 18 types; making everything normal makes this 1/18 potential, not half potential.
lol sumwun you knew what i meant
Only 3 Iv's and 0 in the rest- Can we just have a total of 93 Ivs? (like having 15 in 3 stats and 16 in 3 stats)
