No, you can't, because the items that Pokemon may be holding could be exclusive to that game.

No you can't. I tried the same with Sapphire to Soulsilver . You can still transfer your Pokemon but the items get lost/are deleted on arrival.

that might be a glitch with your system. some well loved old advance games that were played often can be a little touchy, make sure not to bump the cartridge while saving or transfering data- wierd things can occur, both good and bad. my Ruby version gave me a shiny gulpin when i was transferring the pokemon. my adorably annoying cat knocked the DS out of my hand when i was transfering the 6 pokemon to my diamond pal park.
