What does 'soft reset' mean?

Question

Sorry about the question but how does Soft Reset work? Is it like reset all your game and progress and starting from ground zero? Or I "keep" something from my game (like keeping Pokémon I caught earlier) and reset, for example, just the storie?
Sorry for the long question but I need to know this and sorry about being noob (a long time without playing Pokémon). Thx everyone.

A soft reset is when you restart your game to the title screen by pressing a button combination on your console. This will return you to your last save point. If you completely turn off the console and boot it up again, it's called a hard reset. You can see the button combinations for soft resets here.
