Not-The-Traditional-Sandstorm-team team

1 vote

I hope this team doesn't look to gimmicky. I mean to show some pokemon that aren't used much around the database (I'm not talking about T-Tar or Blissey or Gliscor)...

I thought of this team while I was stuck in a pick-up for 2 days in a row. Hope you like my, erm, "Originality." I've never before used these pokemon in a sandstorm team, so I'm just doing my best. I hope to get a LOT of suggestions, because we all know it isn't good.

REX (Tyranitar) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 116 Def / 140 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Payback
- Earthquake
- Superpower

You're probably surprised to see that I'm not using hippowdon, but like I said, this is a team that I'm using never-before-used sandstorm pokemon for me. This is a bulky T-Tar. I chose Payback over Crunch, because he's slow, and meant to take hits. Payback isn't abused enough on Big ol' REX here.

KwaG-Zy-URRR (Quagsire) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Atk / 88 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Stockpile
- Waterfall
- Recover
- Earthquake

I decided to try a UberPwnage Gastrodon-ish set on Quagsire. I decided to give this guy SOME attacking EVs since this guy is never going to be quite as bulky as Gastrodon.

+TURKEY+ (Skarmory) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Fly
- Toxic
- Protect
- Roost

It seems to me that Skarmory has become less popular because Ferrothorn is so good. Well, I'm here to show you how awesome Skarmory is as a toxic staller. First of all, you're probably wondering what I'm doing with FLY. Fly! You probably never thought you'd see this move in competitive battle, but it actually helps Skarm with his stalling. Sure, the opponent could switch out, but then they'd have a 100 lbs of Metal Turkey commin' attem. Though he doesn't hit hard with fly, it gives him a turn to recover with leftovers and stall the opponent.

Pinky (Blissey) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Heal Bell
- Seismic Toss
- Wish
- Thunder Wave

Yeah, I don't use blissey much, but since I don't want my Quaggsire to die of poison, like my Gastrodon usually does, I needed a healer. I chose thunderwave over toxic to cripple the opponent's speed, and annoy the dragon dancer's that thought they'd be forcing a switch.

BulkyBat (Gliscor) (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Roost
- Swords Dance
- Poison Jab

I decided to have another bulky pokemon, and one that I've found annoying in my battles. He's a good sweeper, with some nice attack power after a couple of sword dances. I know there are better sets out there, and I'm all ears since I haven't been able to get gliscor to work for me much in my battles.

Nastylittlesucker (Durant) (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Hustle
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Iron Head
- X-Scissor
- Superpower
- Crunch

Hustle makes this guy really powerful. I would've gone with Stone Edge, but with hustle the accuracy, and my bad Luck Combined makes for a really BAD move.

Finally! You made a team without freaking Hippo and Gastro? Upvoted ;]
Yeah? Well, some jerk downvoted.
Don't be hating on hippo.
Thanks spoink -_-
I would Suggest Taking of Superpower and teaching it Hone Claws, because Durant has natural bulk to set it up, which means your attack is higher and you get back accuracy that Hustle takes away
Try scaled and ice beam  on quagsire it will help the bulk if you burn and icebeam  hits grass types..
Nice team but you know all of the members appart from durant are pretty standard.
But because there is decent synergy, durant and quag you have my vote lol, but you may want to try a curse set as it will suvive no grass attack and appart from that nothing hits it hard special wise.
Thanks Blob :D and yeah, I'm going with Quag's Curse set.
Don't you Hang onto the toxic orb after it is used? Because if you do acrobatics is useless
Good to know you're starting to think of doing things differently then other standard Smogon teams, keep trying.

Hey Gigaslash. I knew you would come back to the site with a fresh new sand team, and I wanna rate it. Firstly, don't put yourself down! Just because you used a few unconventional pokemon doesn't mean the team isn't good. It's a cool team, and the roles and members seem solid. However, I still have a couple of suggestions to help improve it, even though I'm not the expert on sandstorm or even OU, I can see things that should be changed. Also... what is WITH those nicknames? '+TURKEY+'?! Are you serious...?

Anyway xD let's go!

Tyranitar
Looks pretty good, but I'm not sure about all those attacks without any investment. Skarmory can probably sponge most physical attacks anyway, so I'd shift those Def EVs over to Atk. Also, Payback sounds nice, until you realise you miss out on the full power on a surprising number of threats, including Reuniclus.

Quagsire
How many times do I have to tell people? As chill as Quagsire is, if he doesn't have Unaware, he is badly outclassed by Gastrodon. Luckily, he's not, because of that great ability! It lets him hard counter most setup sweepers (because you know, screw Venusaur).

Another problem I've found with UberPwnage's Gastro set is that even once you've fully stockpiled up, you're a sitting duck. Thanks to Unaware, you're not setup bait, but you're basically just waiting for something to come in and force you out with Toxic. To deal with this, I think a Curse Quagsire set would be better.

Quagsire (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Curse
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch / Waterfall
- Recover

Curse is obviously to set up, and with 252 SDef investment and a Careful nature, lets you take hits easily. Earthquake is your primary STAB move, and hits hard after a few Curses. In the next slot, you can have either Ice Punch or Waterfall. Ice Punch has much better coverage, and doesn't leave you completely walled by Grass types. On the other hand, most Grass types force you out anyway, so Waterfall is viable for harder hitting STAB when Earthquake is ineffective. Recover lets you regain health, meaning you can shrug off weak attacks and continue to Curse up.

Skarmory
This is an interesting set, I like it. Skarmory also forms an amazing defensive core with Quagsire, which is nice. However, using Fly is basically screaming 'HEY MAGNEZONE! GET A FREE SWITCH IN AND SET UP ON MY FACE!' lol. Sky Drop is definitely the better option, as it also traps in the opposing pokemon, and the lower Base Power isn't really an issue.

Blissey
As far as I know, if you're using Seismic Toss on Blissey, Chansey is better. It can still pass huge Wishes, and has much better bulk on both sides. The lack of Leftovers recovery isn't that much of a big deal.

Gliscor
Well, you said yourself this set isn't working out for you, and I can see why. (poison jab? dafuq) So, I have an awesome Gliscor set I like to use when I use sand. It works really well and I'm sure you enjoy making people rage xD

Gliscor (M) @ FLYING GEM -_-
Trait: Sand Veil
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- Swords Dance
- Acrobatics
- Earthquake

Lol, this set is amazing to troll people. Basically, you keep setting up substitutes. When you factor in Sand Veil's 20% chance to make the opponent miss, along with paralysis support from Blissey, it is inevitable that you'll get up a free sub eventually. From there, you use SD, and then wreck shop with your amazingly powerful Acrobatics. Even after your Substitute is broken, revenge killers are risky because of Sand Veil :3

Durant
Well, this is an okay set I guess. However, I have noticed that your team already has too many physical attackers, so I'd say replace him for a special attacker that works well in sand. Unfortunately, I'm tired, so I cba to list the full sets. Look them up on the pokebase or something. xP

  • Reuniclus
  • Jirachi
  • Heatran
  • Rotom-W
  • Latios

If you do decide to keep him though, then Hone Claws is amazing, as it boosts his Attack even further while fixing Hustle's accuracy problem. You really don't need Crunch at all, so replace that.

Well, I finally finished my answer. It was a great team and fun to rate. I hope my suggestions helped, though. See ya! :]

Hiya Spoink! Glad to see you getting into OU...

Love the T-Tar
Love the Quagsire
Love the Skarmory
Love the Soon to be CHANSEY
Love the Glisco--- Wait, Leftovers+Acrobatics? PHALE XP
Love the Durant DEFINITELY giving him hone claws, as accuracy is an issue for me.

I can't believe for special attackers you named Latios and NOT Latias. -.-
Oh man, completely forgot about that! And I don't even know the difference between Latios and Latias xP glad I helped. :]
