Meta Battle Subway PokeBase - Pokemon Q&A

What is a good moveset for Tangrowth?

2 votes

Yep, I missed another one. Mine is EV trained in Attack, Speed, and HP. It has the ability Chlorophyll. It knows:

Power Whip: High power, STAB, decent PP.

Earthquake: Obviously.

Sleep Powder: Puts the foe to Sleep.

Knock Off: Knocks off the foe's item.

5th Gen tier: OU
Huh? What? This guy is NU.
Not to smogon
Tangela (M) @ Evolution Stone
Trait: Regeneration
EVs: 120 HP / 136 SAtk / 252 SDef
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Giga Drain
- Leech Seed
- Sleep Powder
- Hidden Power [Rock]
the foes item isn't usually worth the trouble. I'd replace knock off

Since Yours Is EV Trained In Attack, I Will Give A Physical Moveset. If You Would Also Like The Special Moveset, Comment Below, and Ill Edit it.

Physical: Item: Quick Claw:
Rock Slide: It Covers So Many Weaknesses, that Just Like Sceptile, It Is Worth It.
Power Whip/Seed Bomb: STAB, Decent Coverage.
Sleep Powder Isnt Exactly Accurate, But If You Want To Keep It Go Ahead. If Not, I Would Suggest Earthquake To Cover Its Final Weakness.
Finally: Leech Seed: For Healing, Or Brick Break or Poison Jab For More Coverage.

Special Moveset:
Mine As Well Make Use Of That Chloyaphyl, or Leaf Guard.
Sunny Day: Ability, Solarbeam, Etc.
Solarbeam: STAB Strong Acc. and Power
Ancientpower: Covers 4 Weaknesses
Synthesis: Heals Alot Of HP In The Sun:)
Preferably Holding A Heat Rock.

Sure, give a Special moveset so that people with a special Tangrowth will have a moveset. And I think I'll do Poison Jab instead of Knock Off.

Gen V

Tangrowth (M) @ Life Orb

Trait: Chlorophyll

EVs: 128 Def / 128 SAtk / 252 Spd

Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

  • Giga Drain
  • Stun Spore
  • Hidden Power [Fire]
  • Focus Blast

Sun sweeper
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Chlorophyll
Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 S.Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Hp

Growth boosts S.Attack (and attack but that is not important here) by 2 stages in the sun. Solar-beam is powerful STAB while Giga-drain is healing STAB. Hidden-power(Fire) is coverage and is boosted by the sun. Focus-blast is coverage while Ancient-power is for some fun coverage that can boost all stats for some fun.

Note: You can make this set a Physical one too if you just go Jolly and swap the S.attack EVs for Attack, then teach it Seed-bomb, E-quake, and Rock-slide/Brick-break. Also this set requires Sun-support.

Tangela (M/F) @ Eviolite

Trait: Regenerator
EV's 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD
Nature: Bold (-Att, +Def.)
-Sleep Powder
-Leech Seed
-Giga Drain

Okay here we go, Eviolite is to boost Tangela's decent defenses even higher, the EV's are for bulk, Bold is to make Tangela a Physical Wall. Sleep Powder is to put the opponent to sleep. Leech Seed is to drain the foe's HP away. Substitute makes this a SubSeed set and with Regenerater you can set up Substitutes as long as you want. Giga Drain is to heal and it's STAB.

Bulky kind of fast special sweeper with sun

Tangrowth@Heat Rock
Modest (+special attack -attack)
EVs: 252 special attack/ 128 HP/ 128 speed
Sunny Day
Solar Beam
Hidden Power [Fire]

He starts by using Sunny Day, which doubles his speed because of Chlorophyll. Then he can use Solar beam (Now taking one turn because of sunlight) or Hidden Power (Which is powered up because of sunlight). And when his health gets low, he uses Synthesis (Which restores ⅔ of it's maximum HP instead of half because of sunlight). So overall, he has quite a lot of power, and a reliable way to restore health quickly.

But, he won't be much use if the fo has air lock or cloud nine, so you should make sure to defeat Pokemon with those abilities first with other Pokemon on your team.

Tangrowth @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
Sassy Nature
252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Def
-Leech Seed
-Giga Drain

This thing is NOT dying. Trap with Infestation, chip away HP with Toxic, and provide a constant drain with Leech Seed. Toxic boosts the power of Leech Seed, getting you more and more HP per turn. Giga Drain keeps up your HP.

When suddenly, Venusaur.
When suddenly, switch to Talonflame. Or kill Venusaur before sending Tangrowth in.
Lol yeah. I just wanted to point out that Venusaur is a competitive Pokemon that would wreck this set.
Yep, I gotcha.

Tangrowth @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power Ice

Pretty much the OU set of Tangrowth. Giga Drain is obligatory STAB, nailing them Water Types that run around(Rotom-W, MGyarados, Suicune, and other things.) Knock Off works great with Tangrown, pretty much nailing any switch in to it, and removing its item(unless a Mega.) Earthquake also pairs well with a Grass type such as Tangrowth in OU, destroying Steel types on the switch, most notably Heatran. And last but not least, HP Ice. Mainly there as coverage against the Pokemon 4x weak to Ice(Landorus, Garchomp, Dragonite, Gluscor), but one can opt to go for HP Fire to nail Ferrothorn and Scizor, if you have the former Mons covered.

Gen V Set for Tangela

Tangela (M) @ Eviolite

Trait: Regenerator

EVs: 252 Def / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef

Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

  • Giga Drain
  • Sleep Powder
  • Hidden Power [Fire]
  • Leech Seed

I would have

Earthquake-Decent power accuracy and PP

Synthesis-Leech seed or giga drain arn't necessary if you can heal this way

Rock Slide-Coverage

Power Whip-Reasonably accurate and really powerful

answered Feb 17, 2012 by brainbox
yes but how ever leech seed is like being poison or being burn it would be better to have leech seed and synthesis as a combo

Item: Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator/Leaf-guard
Nature: Bold
EVs: 252 Defense, 180 Hp, 78 S.Defense

Amnesia is for boosting that terrible S.Defense. Leech-seed is for stalling and healing. Sleep-powder gives you more time to heal/boost, while Toxic is for more stalling. Giga-drain is STAB and healing.

This thing is one of the most beastly walls in RU, possessing more physical bulk than Skarmory, access to Leech Seed and Sleep Powder, the highly covered ability Regenerator, along with a good STAB in Power Whip and a decent Atk stat to use it.

Tangrowth @ Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
Bold Nature
- Sleep Powder
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Insane bulk, the ability to SleepSeed, a great STAB, and HP Fire to take down Ferroseeds and grass type and bug type switch ins. What more does he need?

--------------------------This moveset is for a SUN TEAM------------------------------

Bulky Sun Sustaining Vines

Nature - Calm (+SpD, -Atk)

EV's : 252-SpD 252-HP 4-SpA

Item - Big Root / Leftovers ( It's your preference, but I prefer Big Root)

Ability - Leaf Guard - I'm not gettin' toxic'ed today! ;D

Grassy Terrain / HP Fire - I DO know that Grassy Terrain heals the other team to, but the 50% boost to Grass type (STAB in this case) moves helps a lot. HP Fire is for coverage and gets boosted by the sun.

Giga Drain - STAB, also more healing

Leech Seed - I like this for wearing down, also for even more heals

Ingrain / Synthesis - Again, your choice, but I prefer Synthesis for yet even MORE heals! ( Some people playing X / Y may not have access to Tangrowth getting Synthesis. This is due to no move tutors to teach him the move. However, Ingrain works just as well, if not better. Although you can't planning to be switching a lot. ;)

Why not Rest over Synthesis because Leaf Guard protects from status and Rest fully heals, unlike Synthesis?
@Dusparce, does LG protect from self-inflicted status conditions? If so, rest all the way!

If there is one thing Tangela proves, its that potential can be found in the strangest of places.

Ability: Regenerator

Ingrain- Healing.

Leech Seed- More healing.

Giga Drain- Even MORE healing(Max PP).

Sleep Powder- Get a free turn and free healing.

What makes Tangela better than Tangrowth is the Eviolite. They have equal special defense base stat so Eviolite really makes up for it. With that good special attack, Tangela becomes an unusual tank.Give it a Sassy nature and 252 HP/128 Spa/96 Spd/32 Def. P.S. If you pair Tangela with my Klefki in double battles you can do a really effective combo(even enough to counter the Mega Kangaskhan and Rotom Wash pairup.)!
