Well, in theory they can. You can have the traditional ones like:
- Poison
- Paralyze
- Sleep
- Freeze

But along side them you can have:
- Confusion
- Leech Seed
- Or a curse (From ghost Pokemon)
All these can be aflicted alongside Poison ect.

But if you mean traditional Status then it's because you could get froze then burnt and toxic which would wipe you out in 3 hits without the additional attackers damage.

Probably to prevent hax-like stuff. I mean, seriously, would you like having Freeze and Paralysis at the same time? Or Burn and Poison? This makes things easier.
