This question is the first step in a larger question I will ask. Route 1 is used because Pidgey and Rattata have the same encounter rate, which makes the work a lot easier.

This link is more of a help.

the formula should be:
1 in (187.5 / ( x )) per step
Let x equal the a value which determines how rare the Pokémon is. The higher the encounter rate, the more common the Pokémon is.

There is about a 4.5% probability of there being a Pidgey and about a 4.5% probability of there being a Rattata. This means about a 91% probability of there being no wild Pokemon.

Your probabilities are incorrect, but thankfully you gave me the link I needed to find this out for myself.
The answer btw is that there is about a 4.5% probability of there being a Pidgey and about a 4.5% probability of there being a Rattata. This means about a 91% probability of there being no wild Pokemon.
I'm assuming what you did was use the encounter rate of 8.5 subbing it in, making it a 1 in 22 ish chance which is more or less 4.5?
So do i get best answer?
I guess.
