Meta Battle Subway PokeBase - Pokemon Q&A

What is a good moveset for Gastrodon?

5 votes

I know that is not my ability on moveset, but I just curious. mine knows:
Body Slam - good power and accuracy, may cause paralyzed.
Ice Beam - cover weakness against grass type.
Surf - STAB, great power and accuracy.
Earth Power - STAB, may decrease defends.

Moveset might not be your specialty, but this is a good moveset. However, I would replace Body Slam with one of three moves because Gastrodon is better for Sp. Attack:

Trump Card: Can end up being incredibly powerful, doesn't miss either. However, this is an Egg move.

Recover: Not many Pokemon have reliable recovery moves, so make use of it.

Sludge Bomb: Good power, good chance to poison, high accuracy.

This is a small little gimmick with him, but a nice one nonetheless.

Ability: Sticky Hold/Storm Drain
Item: Rocky Helmet/Leftovers

  • Amnesia
  • Scald/Earth Power/Ice Beam
  • Counter
  • Recover

The idea with this is to set up an Amnesia and bulk up his already great special defense. This will make the opponent more inclined to use physical attacks on you, prompting the use of counter to deal double damage. Recover lets him shrug off any damage he's taken, and he's got one slot left for an attacking move. Beware using Scald for fear of pokemon like Jellicent, which could shut him down, or several ghost types such as Mismagius or Gengar that can bypass earth power thanks to levitate. Rocky helmet can do even more damage, or help ease damage with leftovers.

Physical Gastrodon: Proud user of Earthquake!

Gastrodon (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sticky Hold
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Curse

Leftovers provides recovery. Sticky Hold is in case someone wants my Leftovers. Waterfall is STAB, along with a chance to flinch, ending up with some nice possible free damage :D Earthquake is STAB and... Godliness. Rock Slide to kill Flying types resisting Earthquake. Finally, Curse makes this guy a Tank. After 2 Curses, this Pokemon has 582 Attack, 470 Defense, 200 Special Defense, and 364 HP. Think I'll go down easy?

Ice Beam- Keep it for dealing with Grass types.Chance to freeze.

Earth Power or Earthquake-Every Ground type Pokemon needs a Ground type move.

Surf-STAB,Great Power,and Accuracy,yep, keep it.

Keep Body Slam or choose somthing else, you choose!

Here's a Physical gastrodon set to make up for his defenses. For an ability, you could go with Sticky hold in the event of a pokemon trying to use trick, but aside from rotom, that doens't come up very often. I prefer a special bulky Storm drainer, but this can work too. This set helps compensate for his low defense, giving you a bulky, high HP pokemon with fire and rock resistance, as well as an electric, and possible water immunity.

Curse-boosts up defense and attack.
Recover-Restores health.
Waterfall-STAB; gets a curse boost.
Earthquake-STAB.

If you don't like these moves, you can also make use of Body Slam for a possible paralysis, stone edge to hit flying types.

Gen. VI: Specially Defensive Wall- "ToxiStall" Set

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 164 HP / 92 SAtk / 252 SDef
Calm Nature

The Standard Gastrodon Set, except with Sludge Bomb to defeat other Fairy Type Special Defensive Walls that would otherwise play around it's Toxic/Burn Stall Strategy.

This is the set I have on my sandstorm Gastrodon.

Gastrodon

Item:Leftovers

GastrodonGastrodon

Moveset:

Scald: Good Power, STAB, good chance for burn

Earth Power: Nice power, stab, chance for lowering target's Sp. Def

This guy is good on a sandstorm, being that water types don't affect him.

HP Electric: OK power, and with...

Ice Beam: You now have the bolt/beam Combo

What is a good move set on Gastrodon?

Huh? Gastrodon a tanky buff physical wall. I wonder??? What is the best moveset for this guy? I mean this tough thing can be almost impossible to kill. This guy has stockpile as an egg move and clear smog! What better can you ask for?

Item: Sitrus Berry (for extra stockpile)/ Leftovers (for health every turn)
Nature: Calm/Bold
Ability: Storm Drain/Sticky Hold (to annoy knock off users)
Calm Nature EVs: Max HP/120 Defense/136 Sp. Defense
Bold Nature EVs: Max HP/136 Defense/120 Sp. Defense

So here is the ultimate moveset for battles;
Stockpile-to boost defenses.
Clear Smog-to clear annoying changes in stats (perfect for sword dancers/calm minders and more.)
Recover-to heal.
Scald-to deal some STAB damage plus you might get a burn off.

Gastrodon @ leftovers
Modest nature (+Sp.atk, -atk)
252 Hp / 252def / 4Sp.atk

Stockpile
Scald/Surf
Earthpower
Icebeam/Sludgebomb/Sludgewave

Stockpile for bulkyness, on both defenses, Scald/surf/earth power for STAB, then Icebeam/Sludgebomb/Sludgewave for Grass coverage, though I would recommend Slugebomb since you also get Fairy coverage as well.

Gastrodon @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 248 HP / 80 Def / 100 SpA / 80 SpD
Bold Nature
- Yawn
- Protect
- Muddy Water
- Earth Power

First, use Yawn to make the opponent drowsy and then use Protect to wait for the opponent to fall asleep. Use the attacking moves to KO your opponent eventually- don't worry- if the opponent wakes up, your high HP will save you! In addition, Rocky Helmet and a Bold nature work together to retaliate against direct attacks! Enjoy!

and remember kids,

252+ SpA Darkrai Dark Pulse vs. 248 HP / 80 SpD Gastrodon: 159-187 (37.4 - 44%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

That's pretty good!

Bold Nature
- Stockpile

- Whirlpool
- Toxic
I know that whirlpool is hard to get due to it being a gen 4 only move but if you wanted to you can use infestation instead
