What's a good moveset for Kabutops?

4 votes

I didn't find a question for it, so I decided to ask. I battled against DT's Kabutops, and it's amazing. What should I teach it?

I would give it this set:

Aerial Ace-Covers fighting and Grass weakness (grass weakness is 4X)

Aqua tail/waterfall-Aqua tail for a bit more power, or waterfall for the chance to flinch and a bit more accuracy. also deals with ground weakness

Rain dance-Powers water move and doubles speed.

iron defense/Brick break/Stealth rock/Stone edge/ swords dance- All of these moves are excellent on Kabutops. Iron defense to make him a powerful physical tank, Brick break to deal with screens, stealth rock to damage foe, stone edge for a powerful STAB, or swords dance to make him a lethal sweeper.

Kabutops is a fatal pokemon in the right situation.

Oh. So do you think it should have return or aerial ace? that's the main difference in our sets.
I like Return better. Aerial Ace isn't too much better, and it is more situational. It requires a Rain Dance set up for sure, which is probably why you had Rain Dance stand on its own, but it also needs a Swords Dance set up if you want to OHKO. However, both options work well, it just depends on what you think are a bigger threat.

Gen V

Kabutops (M) @ Life Orb

Trait: Swift Swim

EVs: 252 Atk / 156 Def / 100 Spd

Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)

  • Aqua Jet
  • Stone Edge
  • X-Scissor
  • Swords Dance

Swift Swim sweeper. Aqua Jet is going to be powerful for a priority attack, thanks to Rain boost (if you aren't using this guy in the Rain, you're wasting potential) Life Orb, and Swords Dance, as well as STAB. Stone Edge also gets STAB. X-Scissor provides type coverage. Your EVs give you enough Speed, especially with Swift Swim and you using Aqua Jet most of the time. Full Attack, and a good amount of bulk so you can survive hits.

Stone Edge: High power, STAB, good chance for criticcal hit.

Waterfall: Good power, high accuracy, STAB, good chance to cause flinching.

Return: High power with Friendship, high accuracy.

Rain Dance/Swords Dance: Choose to either power up Waterfall and increase Speed, or power up everything by a greater amount. If you have the ability Battle Armor, choose Swords Dance for sure.

KABUTOPS --@-- LEFTOVERS or MUSCLE BAND
IMPISH nature, ability: WEAK ARMOR
EVS: 252 ATK, 196 SPEED, 60 HP

-- WATERFALL
-- STONE EDGE
-- SWORDS DANCE
-- NIGHT SLASH

he's got some physical bulk between impish and hp evs, so he can set up swords dance. on the same turn weak armor should activate if your opponent hits you, giving him a NICE speed boost!!
then you have dual stab with waterfall and stone edge ( aqua tail and rock slide are replacements if you wish ) with night slash as my favorite coverage move =)

Rain-team Kabuto

Item: Evolite
Ability: Swift-Swim
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 6 Hp

Hone-claws
Aqua-jet
Rock-slide
Return

Hone-claws is for boosting Attack because he has no Swords-dance. Aqua-Jet is nice STAB and is great priority. Rock-slide is great STAB and coverage. Return is for Power.

Why all the Speed boosting with EVs and Swift Swim, and you have a priority move?
This way he can hit first always. Sometimes you need to outrun and hit hard with things like rock-slide and Return.
FI,you learnt this today when you where battling my good old Fist Of Justice!
Wow that was my 900th Answer :)

Double/Triple Battle

Kabutops (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Weak Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 216 Def / 40 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Rock Slide
- Aerial Ace
- Waterfall
- Brick Break

Use a classic DT strategy of using Fury Swipes to activate Weak Armor. Then sweep!!! Rock Slide is STAB that hits multiple foes. Waterfall is STAB. Aerial Ace can hit any foe in a Triple Battle. Brick Break is dual screen breaking coverage.
