- Hidden Power [Flying]

Fly is too predictable so Aerial Ace is a decent option. Mind Reader/Sheer Cold is often banned cos it's like cheating.

Articuno's defense is very good, so a defensive strategy could work well:
Ice Beam
Toxic
Substitute
Roost

Or, for a more attacking moveset:
Ice Beam (or Avalanche so you can EV train in Attack only, not Sp.Atk)
U-Turn
Steel Wing (covers Rock types, which Articuno has 4x weakness to)
Facade or Return

I like the defensive moveset. I didn't know about the ban.
That's only what I heard, don't know if it's true. Similar to how they ban legendaries in competitions... so you wouldn't be able to use Articuno anyway!
What about:
Sheer Cold
Ice Beam
Avalanche
Blizzard?
SHeer Cold is almost useless without Mind Reader. One type gives horrible type coverage. Articuno has better Sp. Attack and good speed so Avalanche is bad. Blizzard is unreliable. There is no need for four moves of the same type. There is no need most of the time for two moves of the samw type (except maybe in Shaymin's case.)
wolfspell31 are u serious?
Well, I know that certain Legendaries are banned from competitions and tournaments. Those are: Mew, Mewtwo, Lugia, Ho-oh, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect. The banned moves are Sky Drop and Dark Void. (Why do they bother? the move bearer is already banned)
i think ice beam fly  ancient power roost
If only Articuno can learn Earthquake, then he would be able to cover all his weaknesses with awesome power.
Rock smash, anyone?
if you are going to use steel wing would be ok to use the held item metal coat or would that not be good

I've just thought I brinjg to attention this moveset:

Reflect: Allows Articuno to be better defnsively.

Ice Beam: An obvious move choice for an Ice type Pokemon.

Toxic: Can't stall without this.

Hail: In addition to Toxic damage can be deadly. Ice Beam is being used instead of Blizzard because Blizzard has too low PP to be the only attacking move.

By the way, I think that sheer cold is always banned from tournaments. Or else people just don't ever use it without mind reader, as I always watch the regional/national/world vgc battles.

With abomasnow support and dw ability i have found that this is amazing

Articuno

Ability: Snow cloak

Nature: Modest

EVs: 252 S. attack, 129 def, 129 S.def

Blizzard: With snow warning support KABAM!

Tailwind: Now your bulky and fast

Roost: Never Dies!

Ancient power/HP(ground/fighting/fire): A weak boosting move or a decent powered coverage move

Item: Leftovers
Ability: Snow-cloak
Nature: Bold/Impish
EVs: 100 Speed, 200 Defense, 200 S.Defense, 10 Hp

Toxic

Protect

Roost

Blizzard or Fly

Here is a great staller with Hail support. First you inflict Toxic poison on them then you use Protect this causes them to lose HP from both Bad poison AND Hail at the same time. Roost heals you and gets rid of your 4x Rock weakness for that turn and there are only a few rock types that with some kind of support or Scarf can out speed you and hit you before you use it(Terrakion, Aerodactyl, Archeops) but even then Stone-edge is pretty inaccurate especially with Snow-cloak. Blizzard is STAB and has 100% acc in Hail or you can use Fly for STAB and stalling at the same time.

Rain sweeper:

Articuno @ Life Orb

Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)

  • Ice Beam
  • Hurricane
  • Water Pulse
  • Roost

Articuno @ Leftovers

Role: Tank

Trait: Pressure

EVs: 228 HP / 240 Def / 40 SDef

Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)

  • Avalanche
  • Fly
  • Toxic
  • Roost

Avalanche and it's negative priority and " If you've been hit it'll do more damage " style really appeals to me. Fly is for stalling out.. Toxic! Which Toxic is for doing damage and supports the Fly turn wait. Roost keeps you alive.

Gen V

Articuno @ Leftovers

Trait: Snow Cloak

EVs: 252 Def / 4 SAtk / 252 SDef

Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)

  • Ice Beam
  • Hail
  • Reflect
  • Roost

Hail activates Snow Cloak and also damages the foe. Yay! Reflect gives you better defenses, while Roost heals you. Since you only have one attacking move, Ice Beam is the best choice, as Blizzard has too low of PP. Leftovers gives you healing. Your EVs are intended to max out your defensive stats.

I´m thinking of this Timid guy (124 SAtt, 124 Spe, 184 Def, 64 SDef, 12 HP);

(best ability would be Snow Cloak, but...):

  • Hail (this is defensive guy, and Blizzard would be happy also)
  • Roost (heal time)
  • Blizzard (STAB, hail-combo)
  • Fly (hail will take more effect, quite strong)

Double/Triple battle

Articuno @ Life Orb
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Tailwind
- Water Pulse
- Blizzard
- Air Cutter

Tailwind provides team support. Water Pulse can hit any foe in a Triple Battle. Air Cutter and Blizzard are STAB that hit multiple foes.

Articuno's attack stat isn't the best, so I'd refrain from using physical attacks like aerial ace, fly, etc. Its sp.atk is pretty decent however, so I'd go with this kind of moveset:
Articuno@leftovers
Nature: Timid(For speed) or Modest (For sp. atk).
Moveset: Ice Beam, Roost, Signal Beam/Ancientpower/Water Pulse, Hidden Power (Fire or Dragon)
-Roost will help since Articuno is pretty bulky, Ice beam covers several types, one of those three special moves I included could come in handy, but I'd recommend water pulse if you want to get past steel types. Hidden power-fire could work against steel types too, and dragon type isn't super effective against much, but it's only resisted by one type.

Articuno Gen V
Trait : Pressure
EVs : 252 Sp Atk 252 Spd 4 HP

Timid Nature :)
I use Articuno in a RainDance team soo..

-Mind reader --- To set up for...
-Sheer cold --- Mind reader + Sheer cold = 100% 1HitKO!!
-Hurricane --- 100% Accuracy with rain. MUCH more damage than fly :P.
-Icebeam/Raindance --- Icebeam if you dont have time to set up mind reader, raindance if
you need to replenish the rain.

This isn't for competitions cause I think sheer cold is banned.. O.o

In my opinion there is only one collection of moves for an Articuno.

Modest Nature:
252: spa., 100: def, 58: spd, 100: speed
Pressure ability
Ice Beam: for STAB and because of accuracy and power.
Extrasensory: Okay, I'll admit. My Articuno is from my Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness game, but whatever. Good effect, incredible PP, and great power.
Water Pulse: Like you weren't expecting this. I said it was from XD: Great power, great PP, good effect, and good for Fire and Rock types, which are her two main weaknesses she'll be facing.
(Filler): Mine actually has Air Cutter from Platinum. You could of course go with Ancientpower or something like that, which wouldn't be bad. You could also check her HP and see if that would be useful. I'd recommend a Ground type or a Fighting type, to deal with Steel types and Electric types respectively.

Articuno @Life Orb Modest nature.
252 Hp, 252 Sp At, 6 Sp def
Ice beam
Hurricane
Roost
Agility
Ideal lvl 100 Stats: 384 Hp, 236 Def, 317 Sp. At 287 Sp. Def, 206 Spd
(We don't care about it's Attack Stat)
Articuno's type is good offensively, and while some would want a coverage move, Articuno can manage since Ice/Flying cover each other decently. However, it also has very good defenses, especially Special Defense. Unfortunately, it's base Special Attack is pretty average, and it's too slow to keep up with most other offensive Pokemon. This moveset, however, is an effective solution to this, a bulky speed booster allowing Articuno to max out it's Special Attack and place it at much higher levels, while also letting it take advantage of it's bulk, and finally, resolving it's speed issues. Articuno's defensive typing is also quite poor, but this set can help itself with that; Common users of Rock-Type Moves(Besides the Rock Type itself) are either Fighting or Ground Type, which get nailed by it's STAB. Since Roost negates Flying for a turn, it can negate it's Electric-type weakness with using Agility; this is great with it's special defense, as not even Zapdos can KO Articuno in two hits with Thunderbolt. Finally, a good amount of Fire Types cannot stomach Hurricane; either being too frail, or having a secondary type weak to flying, such as Volcarona.

What? This is a legendary and it's this bad? Bad typing, poor stat distribution, narrow movepool and no niche. If you wanted a decent legendary, don't choose Chesnaught.

Articuno@Leftovers/Assault Vest
Ability: Pressure
Nature: Modest
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SAtk / 10 SDef

  • Ice Beam/Blizzard/Freeze-Dry
  • Hurricane
  • HP Electric/Ground
  • Roost/Ancient Power

You can also change the EVs to max speed and special attack with a Life Orb but since Articuno's bulk is its specialty and there is no reason to use a fully offensive Articuno as there's a lot of better sweepers.
