where there abilities in gen 3

I was looking at the abilities page and it said made in III, VI, and V. so were there abilities in I and II (if not, how did it work...)

gen2- No
gen3- Yes
gen4- Yes(more than gen3)
gen5- Yes(more than gen4, dream world ability)

there were abilities in all genrations because your starters and every other pokemon has abilities
