PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

The most popular lead in the OU tier, and for a very great reason. With well-distributed stats all round, a great Movepool, and Download, this guy is a threat to any team.

Now, the main Genesect set that I am seeking a counter for is the most common one, the Choice Scarf Special Sweeper Set. Here is the set, (just in case you don't know)

Genesect @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Download
EV's: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- U-turn
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt/Thunder
- Flamethrower

I strongly encourage listing each counter in the format exampled above by Genesect's main set. Explain why and how that/those Pokemon are a counter to the most used Lead in the metagame.

Turkey Dinner (Rotom-H) @ White Herb/ Leftovers/ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / (252 Spd or 252HP)
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Overheat
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp

This poke resist every single one of those moves on the standard Choice Scarf Genesect (Fire, Electric, Ice, & Bug). It is also immune to HP [Ground]. If it just so happened to be raining, it still OHKO Genesect with Overheat and will be faster with a Choice Scarf since most Rain Genesect run Life Orb.

Since Rotom-H has equal defenses, put the last 4 EVs to SpDef so Genesect can't get any boosts on a switch (better safe than sorry). Also gives more switches on SR, so it's a win-win.

Just for fun:

0SpAtk Rotom (-SAtk) Overheat vs 252HP/252SpDef Leftovers Genesect (+SpDef): 107% - 126% (372 - 436 HP). Guaranteed OHKO.

So even an uninvested negative natured Overheat will OHKO a Max HP/ Sp.Def Genesect.

Note: This calculation was done under normal weather. Don't get cocky when it is raining.

Magnezone @ Leftovers
Trait: Magnet Pull
EVs: 252 HP / 164 SAtk / 92 SDef
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Tri Attack

This is if you want to trap Genesect.

This poke resist BoltBeam & U-Turn. Only problem is Flamethrower. If you can switch in on BoltBeam, Awesome. but in the event that you need to go up against Flamethrower, do not fear. This EV spread is meant to take a +1 Flamethrower. 2HKO. But you only need one to singe that Kabutops imposter. 164 SpAtk EVs is enough to OHKO with HP [Fire].

252SpAtk +1 Genesect (Neutral) Flamethrower vs 252HP/92SpDef Leftovers Sturdy Magnezone (Neutral): 84% - 99% (290 - 342 HP). Guaranteed 2HKO.

Hidden Power [Fire} is 2HKO in Rain. However, on Magnezone:

Flamethrower in Rain is 4HKO
+1 Flamethrower in Rain is 3HKO

Specially Defensive Heatran. Takes everything except like, HP Ground which nobody really uses and if they are, they'll have to give up a moveslot for it weakening its coverage and letting one of your other pokes check it. 4x resists U-Turn and Ice Beam, immune to Flamethrower, Thunderbolt will barely scratch it even at +1 ( okay maybe an exagguration but Heatran just needs 1 turn to KO it with Lava Plume, and it won't get a satk boost switching in anyway )

Heatran @ Leftovers
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 248 SDef / 12 Spd
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock
- Roar / Protect

Well, I dunno if this guy is commonly used as a Genesect counter (Why would anyone counter that cute wittle bug .-.) but I know Heatran is one of the best Genesect counters as it can switch into Flamethrower and succesfully force Genesect out.Blissey and Chansey can switch into anything except a well-predicted U-Turn. Gliscor & Landorus-T are top notch U-turn absorbers, and they can somewhat take on everything else barring +1 Flamethrower and Ice Beam. Tentacruel & Jellicent are solid checks; they can switch into everything barring Thunderbolt (and even then it doesn't do THAT much damage unless its +1 Thunderbolt). Even though you didn't list the Rock Polish set, Jirachi and Gastrodon can handle that variant pretty well. While it's not a Pokemon, Hazards destroy that poor thing as it will be switching out a lot with U-Turn. It can also be trapped and killed by Magneton / Magnezone with Hidden Power [Fire] if it's trapped into Thunderbolt or Ice Beam.
Ok, I am aiming for the BA, so I'll add some other ones. Genesect and Scizor counter Genesect pretty well if you're 100% positive he'll not use Flamethrower or he's locked into another move. While he cannot switch into him, Terrakion can hit very hard with his STABs and in Sand..... Game over for Genesect. Dugtrio can also trap Genesect, much like Magneton / Magnezone, and can easily switch into him if he's locked into Thunderbolt. I wouldn't trust the Specially Defensive Heatran, though, if you see that the guy is LO or Expert Belt. That's about it, I hope it's enough to get the BA :P

If it carries Giga Drain, then some Pokemon won't counter too well. My Genesect was screwed with Gastros, but Giga Drain solved the problem.

This Pokemon cant come in but if you get a free switch into him you can pretty much destroy a genesect.

Sableye @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 128 Def / 128 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Will-O-Wisp
- Substitute
- Recover
- Torment

Basically wait until the genesect is locked into a move. Then come in and Torment him. You now get a free sub up and if they decide to stay in you can burn it to reduce the damage it does with U-Turn even with the +1 helping the rest of your team. As long as this guy is in they will regret locking themselves into a move.Well actually he can come in and take a hit torment Recover and come back in again so he could work well.
