According to Bulbapedia, there are 559 moves in the game. Smeargle can sketch all but struggle and chatter. He also probably wouldn't carry sketch for a battle, so I won't count that. That leaves 556 moves total for him to learn. nCr=n!/(r!(n-r)!). n=556 and r=4, making 3,939,049,415 possible combinations for a smeargle moveset.
4 billion move combinations sounds impressive but half of them would be completely useless. Splash, anyone?
True, but having that many possible combinations is still cool.
Smeargle (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Technician
EVs: 252 Def/ 252 SDef/ 4 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
 - Sketch
 - Sketch
 - Sketch
 - Sketch

Best moveset ever ;P
lol (filler)
Why does the Smeargle learnset link bring me to a YouTube video?
Because he learns every single move in the game. It's over 9000.
Not chatter

I would use:

  • Spore (100% accuracy to make pokemon fall asleep)
  • Lock-On (next move guaranteed to hit)
  • Sheer Cold
  • Double Edge or another powerful move, just in case the others don't work. Surf would probably be best because it's better against more types (DE would be ineffective against ghosts).

Or instead of the OHKO thing, you could go with Spore, Double Team then two attacking moves, maybe Surf and Earthquake?

I agree fully with this!

First rule of raising the little painter: "A set without Spore, is lucky to be called a 'set' at all."
/Guillotine/Fissure/Horn Drill. Horn Drill is probably easiest to obtain.
I have the same moveset with a little Difference:
My SMEARGLE have TRANSFORM at place DOUBLE EDGE (you can use here OUTRAGE because SMEARGLE have OWN TEMPO Ability).
You can also use FISSURE at place of SHEER COLD.
My Smeargle Evs HP 241 Speed 271
Held Itenm Leftvovers / Brightpowder / Focus Band
Trainer Goofy
This guy should hold a sash for sure.
If I were you I would replace the last move with destiny bond
You should let go of the OHKO move. It has really low accuracy. I'd put Earthquake. Of course you could get it to hold a wide lens, zoom lens, or use X Accuracy.
Also you can use SPORE (put enemy pokémon to sleep), SEISMIC TOSS (always hit 100 hp), SMOKESCREEN or DOUBLE TEAM or CONFUSE RAY or ATTRAC (check your pokémon gender) or THUNDER WAVE or NIGHTMARE or TRANSFORM, and one cover move at your choice. I dont know man, what you choice ;)
Held Itenm Leftvovers / Brightpowder / Focus Band
Smeargle HP 241 Speed 271 JOLLY
Trainer Goofy
Use minimize instead of double team :)
@ xxsilverxx. The OHKO move has 100% accuracy with lock on, as lock on ensures the next move will hit.

I like endeavor and extreem speed. If you have a focus sash and you are level one you can beat your friends level 100 with a level one.

answered Jul 15, 2010 by ohioscyther
A STARLY did that to an ARCEUS on a Battle Video once.
I like this moveset, now I'm going to go and catch a Smeargle.
This is just a copy of Uncle Nick's F.E.A.R. Rattata(ScrewAttack).

Focus Sash

Item: Focus-sash
Nature: Timid/Jolly
Ability: Own-tempo/Moody
EVs: 252 Speed, 128 Defense, 128 S.Defense

Spore makes them go to sleep. Quiver-dance and Bulk-up are boosts to pass and when combined they boost all your basic stats(Accuracy and evasiveness being secondary stats). Baton-pass passes the stat boosts.

Disclaimer: If you use this set people may hate you, use at own risk.
Why do you have Baton pass? It is a ridiculous move, you can just switch Smeargle out instead.
Beacause if you just switch out all of the stat boosting is wasted. Baton Pass passes on ALL stat boosts to the next Pokemon.

What I use is a set-up Smeargel, and it works really well:

Smeargle (F) @ Focus Sash

Trait: Own Tempo
EVs: 128 Def / 128 Special Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Spikes
- Toxic Spikes
- Stealth Rock
- Spore

So basically, Smeargle prevents fainting from Focus Sash, and spores them to sleep if she doesn't attack first. Either way, asleep. This gives her a chance to set up, Stealth Rocks, possibly a few layers of Spikes, and some Toxic Spikes to get that in-between damage rolling. Lets just hope, as the user, you can get set up quickly. And man, does this thing screw you if you don't have a rapid spinner. ;P

Personally I would use Spore instead of Dragon-tail/Circle throw as Smeargle does not have the bulk to set up.
Right. Thanks SF! Dont know what I'd do without ya. ;P
Replace Spikes with Sticky Web and your set.

Note: This is not a competitive set. This is an in-game moveset used to capture rare Pokemon.

Ability: Technician
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spd, 4 HP (then again, who cares about Evs for in-game?)

  • False Swipe
  • Spore
  • Heal Block/Soak/Shadow Claw
  • Mean Look

False Swipe gets a STAB+Technician boost and leaves one HP for the Pokemon you're trying to catch. Spore leaves them with sleep status, which is optimal for capture. Heal block is for legendary Pokemon that like to restore their health, and soak can turn your opponent into water type, meaning that ghosts that would otherwise be immune to false swipe no longer have that luxury. Not only does soak eliminate their STAB in most cases, but it lets you use net balls on them if you can't use dusk balls. (that one is more situational, but it can still be helpful depending on what verison you own.) Mean Look prevents manual fleeing, and since the Pokemon is asleep, it has a low chance of being able to get in a roar on you.

awesome moveset that helps catch TONS of Pokemon...
Well, how about roaming Legendary that using Roar? That move is such as pain in the ass!
I remember in HeartGold SoulSilver and in Pokemon X and Y sucuine entei rakiou articuno zapdos and moltres leave (in X and Y articuno zapdos and moltres disappears  until you see then about 9 times) in HeartGold and SoulSliver you have one turn. But for other pokemon with roar its Great !
I think that false swipe,  spore, thunder wave and soak would be better as a lot of things aren't effected by spore

Well a good moveset would have lock on and a one hit k-o move like sheer cold then moves like earthquake and psychic to defend against fighting types. Sheer cold is better becuase it effects all types.

Shell Smashing Smeargle

@Focus Sash
252hp 4Def 252Speed
Jolly/Timid nature
-Baton Pass
-Shell Smash
-Destiny Bond

I had allot of fun with this set yesterday, considering your reading this on the 30th of may.
Ok so the only type of smeargle you see in the current meta game is Spore.Baton Pass.Shell Smash, No one ever thinks about the last move.
So why not destiny bond.
So heres the strat- Send out smeargle first use shell smash (yes first, unlike other sets that allows you to out speed your opponent to put them to sleep, that then allows you to spore so they wont wake up and kill the pokemon passed to which if you use spore first they would have a good chance, though dont use if the pokemon is well known for a priority move which most leads are not.)

Second spore then pass.
Sweeper sweeps.
Ok sweeper eventually gets taken out so switch back in 276 speed will out run most pokemon so you can then spore them and use the usual tactic pass again.
But If the foe is sweeping your team and it will loose you the match send in 1hp smeargle with destiny bond, who will expect that, now you have no major threat to deal with.

That IS hilarious!
I was staring at this set for a good minute trying to see what was so good about the moves.
why not Cotton Guard?
Instead of Harden?
Because Smeargle doesn't use protection.

Sheep skin   -   Cotton
Guard (self explanatory)
Pound isn't a very good move, it doesn't do enough damage.
How bout Bone Rush?
i agree bone rush and cotton guard *by the way im new to being a user on this site*

Shell Smash
ExtremeSpeed / Mach Punch

  • Start off with Shell Smash, if you go down to your focus sash then, put them to sleep with added speed. Endeavor them to 1hp too, then out speed them with ExtremeSpeed or Mach Punch. If they don't hit you first go, do another shell smash and up your attack!

Pretty good idea here.
thought i would try something different!
/Bullet Punch/Quick Attack
Well what if u were against a ghost type? because you don't have baton pass so u can't keep the shell smash for a high defense pokemon. But it still is a great moveset for other pokemon types :)

Okay, this one won't work unless your opponent has a weak lead, but if it does work, well, you will have one ticked-off opponent on your hands.

Okay, so this is primarily a lead but can be used later as well:

Smeargle (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Own Tempo
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Belly Drum/Swords Dance
- Agility
- Baton Pass
- Protect

First, go for either Agility or Belly Drum (use Belly Drum ONLY if your opponent's Pokemon can't one-hit the smeargle). If you use Belly Drum, follow up with Protect to regain some of the lost HP with Leftovers. After that, use Baton Pass to give the boost to either a speedy poke or a physical poke.

Used correctly, this can make any physical attacker with decent speed impossible to touch.
It should be taken note of that it would help lots to also have a priority attack on whoever you are Baton Passing to, because if you pass to, say, Salamence, an Ice Shard might almost kill it. So be aware.

Moody cannot be used with Baton Pass.
I'll change that.

Here is a Smeargle for use in Rain Teams.

Smeargle @ Life Orb
Trait: Techinician
EVs: 252 SAtk/ 252 HP/ 4 Spe
Modest Nature (+SAtk,-Atk)

  • Soak
  • Thunder
  • Bullet Punch/ Charge Beam
  • Hurricane

Soak is for turning the opponent into a Water type and use Thunder on him. Bullet Punch is for Priority but Charge Beam can be used on the Water type, being super-effective and having a chance to raise Smeargle's low Special attack. Hurricane is also a good move in Rain.

answered Jul 1, 2012 by JirachiCelebiMew
what are you going to do when a pokemon with a weather starting ability comes in?
xD Weather is pretty rare in NU but.... I could just switch into my Rain starter and kill the other Weather starter :P
yeah but what if it was Abamasnow aka barrack obamasnow? Cot sumpthin' super effective to that?
Smeargle is RU, I thought.
So you have access to every priority move in the game, but you choose the one with the worst possible typing? GJ.
With that being said, go for Aqua Jet. (Tech + Rain)
Right xD
Probably not Aqua jet because of soak, but instead maybe ExtremeSpeed

Healer/state raising Smeargle

Item:Focus Sash

-Lunar Dance

-Quiver Dance

-Calm Mind

-Baton Pass

-Lunar Dance for healing completely wounded Pokemon on your teams on Wi-Fi battles/Normal trainer battles and for healing their PP.Smeargle will faint using this move so use it later when a teamate is low on Hp/PP.

-Quiver Dance for raising speed/special attack/special defence.

-Calm Mind for raising attack/special attack.

-Batton pass for passing the states to the next Pokemon.

Hope this is a great moveset with smeargle if you don't like Calm Mind replace it with a better state raising move.

Item: Focus Sash
Ability: Own Tempo
Stealth Rock
Seismic Toss/Toxic Spikes

First turn spore, then stealth rock and spikes, if you get spore with focus sash intact you can spore again, maybe maxing out spikes at three, then toxic spikes or seismic toss, your preference to either dent the lead or get more entry hazards up, seismic toss keeps him from being immobilized by taunt.

Love this! I was also thinking of creating a whole team of Smeargles since I got a box and a half with 2-3 IV Technician/Own Tempo Jolly Smeargles from breeding my main one...
You've come up with a great idea and I might just adapt to this. :)

Later Answer tho..

Smeargle (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait; Own Tempo
Nature; Jolly/Timid
EV's; 252 SpD, 128 Def, 128 SpecDef

Dark Void
Shell Smash
Toxic Spikes
Baton Pass

I run this moveset with my Gengar. After using 1-2 Shell smashes and toxic spikes I go to my Gengar and start spamming with Hex. Every Pkmn is 1HKO.

Here's a super annoying smeargle that reks in 1v1

Smeargle @ Leftovers(sash is banned in 1v1)
Trait: Technician
Timid Nature
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Spe, 4 Def

So here's the objective of this set: when you use Spore on your opponent, you can use Taunt(optional). Right after you Taunt your opponent make sure you use Imprison. After that use transform. Your opponent will now be struggling to take out your Smeargle

Pun Intended

answered Sep 8, 2014 by Almighty Derpados
haha i use the same set on 1v1 before i saw others did also. It works beutifully and if your  opponent wakes up then... you dead. and also only use this vs stallers or slower guys than you
