What is a good moveset for Dragonite?

Here we go with Dragonite, one of the original uber-pokemon. It has a big movepool so there could be a lot of good answers here...

Dragon Claw (or Dragon Rush) or Dragon Pulse. Depends on stats. Does not confuse like Outrage.

Waterfall: Coverage and seems to make the foe flinch a good amount of the time.

Earthquake: High power/accuracy, type coverage, good to attack digging foes.

Dragon Dance: Good Stat move.

Well roost removes flying type for that turn so it would be 2x effective and Yache berry would weaken a super effective ice move
Trachy,i'm just saying that digging foes wouldn't even effect Dragonite
I think I should keep outrage because outrage with 2 dragon dances will easily ko at most 3 pokemon (unless they're fairy type) and when he gets confused i would just switch out to a defence/spe defence pokemon.
What about Extremespeed?
my Dragonite has a similar moveset except it knows thunder punch instead of waterfall. Good for water types and talonflame

Rain abuser set:

Surf-gets powered from the rain.

Thunder-Picks off threats like Kabutops and Gyarados.

Hurricane-STAB, 100% accuracy. It's neutral against scizor and is special, so it has a good chance to break through him.

Dragon Pulse/hidden power [fighting]/focus blast/Roost-Dragon pulse offers STAB, focus blast breaks through ferrothorn, and hidden power does the same, but if a bit more reliable. It also covers his ice and rock weakness. Roost restores health and keeps his multiscale ability active.

Good idea, but the fourth move should be Rain Dance.
This is for rain teams, so you would have politoed.
A wonderful moveset for this kind of thing, and something you won't see often, making it even more effective.
Wonderful moveset! Recently read how Dragonite is the only pokémon to have both Hurricane and Thunder. Even though Dragonite's stats compliment physical moves more
Great moveset! But maybe surf should be waterfall?
how about Aqua Jet?
Priority is also nice + boost.
And ability Multiscale( yea, its from pokeprofiles :))
Wat about Aqua Tail? Damage of Surf, but works for his physical advantages.
I didn't suggest Aqua tail because his EVs are likely invested in special attack for this set.
Dude, Your worry shouldn't be Ferrothorn. It should be those Ice ( and possibly Water) types. They have those Ice Type moves that dominate Dragonite. Try Brick Break or Fire Punch in place of Focus Blast as well.
Actually, Ferrothorn is going to be more of a threat than Ice types. With high defensive stats as well as resistances to Surf and Thunder, it is harder to take down that an Ice or Water type. That it is the third most common Pokemon in OU adds to its danger. Ice type doesn't provide it with any resistances it can make use of, and with the weak defenses of most Ice types, they find it difficult to switch in.

The most common Ice types in OU are Cloyster and Mamoswine. Cloyster can take a Fire Punch and Brick Break pretty well thanks to that 180 Def stat. However, it won't be taking a Thunder. Mamoswine can also take Brick Break and Fire Punch well, but it cannot take a Surf.

Having Fire Punch in Rain will cause it to do little damage. Both Fire Punch and Brick Break are physical. This means that you will have to run a defense reducing nature to use them. Dragonite isn't the fastest thing out there, and lacking in bulk will cause it to quickly go down.
jeezz people stop suggesting physical moves, obviously this is a special set. And for the ice breaking move I would go with focus blast, its power isn't great but it's added effect is a nice bonus and great power.  hidden power's power is pretty low, and it can be a difficult job to get the type right
What about Rain Dance for last move?

This one is pretty awesome I think:
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Superpower
- Earthquake

There are so may choices, you could add in Waterfall or Fire Punch, both get good type coverage.

I likethis moveset, but i dont know how to teach him Superpower! Anyone know how?
Take him to the move tutor in HG/SS or Platinum, and you can teach him superpower there.
Thunderwave is good, why doesn't someone put that on

Gen V

Dragonite (M) @ Leftovers

Trait: Multiscale

EVs: 252 Atk / 156 SDef / 100 Spd

Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)

  • Dragon Dance
  • Roost
  • Dragon Claw
  • Fire Punch

Set up Dragon Dance then start hitting the opponent hard. Dragon Claw provides STAB, while Fire Punch deals with Steel types. Multiscale is a great ability, giving Dragonite incredible bulk, possibly allowing it to survive an Ice attack even. You can then use Roost to get yourself back up to full health to make use of Multiscale. Leftovers provideas more bulk. Your EVs give you nice bulk, and good stats for sweeping with Dragon Dance.

I like earthquake,
Fire punch/blast or flamethrower for ice types,
Thunderbolt(for parylzylation(did I spell that right?) and good power against quite a few types)
Dragon Claw(for strong STAB)

answered Jul 15, 2010 by Swampert
You might want to ev train in special attack and give it fire blast so you can OHKO and it is actually paralysis but nice try :)
you spelled paralyzation wrong
Thunderbolt is good because some ice types like Cloyster and Dewgong are part Water type.Mostly all water types can learn ice moves.
Flamethrower is good for Ice types and for the type coverage.

Earthquake?Hmm I'd change that for Dragon Dance just incase the opponent switches.

First move I see on any Dragonite: Dragon Dance. Well, say hello to Parashuffler Dragonite.

Dragonite

Dragonite (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 HP / 96 Def / 156 SDef / 4 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- Thunder Wave
- Dragon Tail
- Roost

Parashuffler Dragonite is one of the most underrated sets of all time. This can team holes in entire teams using only 1 attacking move. The Lefties gives me constant recovery, and lowers the usage of Roost. My EVs even my Defenses out at 275 and 386 HP. Beast, huh? Substitute lets me avoid some damage, and helps on Walls that will try to set up on me. Thunder Wave cripples many Sweepers, and occasionally haxes them, giving me a free Dragon Tail to cripple another. Dragon Tail Phazes foes, many of which will be Paralyzed by Thunder Wave. Finally, Roost gives me reliable recovery and prolongs my support. You can find a different form of it here, but I disreccomend it because you are killed by Physical moves. The set I posted is even better if you have Hazards up.

Hope you like!

Dragon Tail ( Nail them hard for the switch into hazards )
Earthquake ( Coverage )
ExtremeSpeed ( Priority )
Fire Punch ( Ice coverage )

A good move set would be...

outrage-to deal with most dragon types

aqua tail-for type covrage and because of its attack stat

stone edge-for type covrage and again because of attack stat

earthquake-because of attack

i hope this move set helps!

Ground isn't good against ice.
But Rock is.

First off equip the persim berry

outrage: STAB amazing with his attack power and persim berry takes care of confusion

Ice beam: great move

thunderpunch: better than tbolt because of his attack stat

roost: its nice to be able to heal

Hey this is what my dragonite knows
Fire punch
Dragonrush
Brickbreak
and dragon dance
with a muscle band

answered Mar 19, 2011 by Snivyrocks1
Here's my opinion, switch out dragon rush with either outrage or dragon claw.(unless you WANT to miss the opponent ;)
What's wrong with this answer?
Nothing's wrong, I just don't think Dragon Rush is that effective. It's my own opinion.
Well, you could add the item Wide Lens to him to make dragon rush more accurate.

Here's some pretty good movesets:

Physical ~
• Dragon Dance - for setting up Attack and Speed.
• Dragon Claw/Outrage - great power, STAB, and depending on which you prefer (I'd give it Dragon Claw so that you won't have to stay locked on Outrage)
• Extremespeed - for sweeping and for priority priority priority.
• Roost - for keeping your Dragonite alive.

Special ~
• Ice Beam - for coverage from other Dragon types.
• Roost - to heal and keep your Dragonite alive
• Substitute - to give you a chance to heal
• Thunderbolt/Flamethrower - for good power and more coverage (Thunderbolt for Flying types and more or Flamethrower for Ice types)

Dragonite (M) @ Light Clay

Role: Mixed Tank / Screener

Trait: Multiscale

EVs: 100 HP / 96 Atk / 156 Def / 156 SAtk

Naughty Nature (+Atk, -SDef)

  • Outrage
  • Light Screen
  • Fire Blast
  • Roost

I had to test this, and I just wanted to share the quote that the guy I battled used.

" You have got BALLS to use Light Screen on a Dragonite ".
Now, onto the description.

Light Screen provides great team support for other tanks running around, and lets you use a Naught Nature for Mixed Attacking. Yay!

Outrage just lets you bulk jank off while you tear through a small portion of your opponent's team, Not Forgetting Multiscale lets you take the attack setting up Light Screen much better, And Fire Blast covers Steel Types ( Very Defensive physically ) And Ice Types ( Major weakness ) Fairly well, Light Clay makes your Light Screen worth while lasting for 8 turns.

Dragonite (M) @ Life Orb/Leftovers
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Satk / 4 Def/Sdef or Spd
Mild Nature (+SAtk, -Def)
- Superpower
- Roost/Light Screen
- Draco Meteor
- Haze

Pretty simple set here. The idea is to have a Dragonite that can phaze out opponents. He can use superpower to break down Tyranitar, and Draco Meteor offers STAB. The stat drops you get with all these moves are cancelled out thanks to haze, and he can also cancel out the opponent. Roost is there to restore his health and reactivate his ability. It also lets him switch in on pokemon that try to come in. He also resists the main priority moves, mainly mach punch and aqua jet. Watch out for ice shard though.

Sleeping Dragon of DEATH
Item: Eviolite
Ability: Marvel-scale
Nature: Careful
EVs: 252 S.Defense, 200 Defense, 58 Attack or HP

Rest

Sleep-talk

Dragon-dance

Dragon-tail

Finally B/W2 brought Sleep-talk and Marvel scale together to make one amazing combination! Rest is for healing. Sleep-talk is for attacking while asleep. Dragon-dance is boosting. Dragon-tail is the whole point, because when it is used with Sleep-talk it does not have the -6 Priority add that with the speed and attack boosts from Dragon-dance and you get one annoying and hard hitting sweeper. When Sleeping Dragonair has about 481 Defense! About 303 when awake, Special Defense is 393. So 262(or 276), 303(481 when asleep), 393 bulk which is rather impressive.

This set is similar to Autotomize, Rest, Sleep-talk, Dragon-tail Steelix. But with Attack boosts, Less weaknesses, more special bulk, and STAB :D

Sweeper Dragonite

Dragonite # Leftovers
Nature: Jolly (^Speed -Sp Atk)
Ability: Multi Scale / Inner Focus
~ 252 Atk EVs / 252 Speed EVs / 6 HP EVs

  • Dragon Dance
  • Fire Punch
  • Thunder Punch
  • Dragon Claw

Okay! So here you have another Sweeper set for Dragonite. You have Dragon Dance for when a foe decides to switch out, or whenever you get a chance to get some stat boosting in. Next is Fire Punch to help destroy Ice types and random coverage, and same goes with Thunder Punch. Use when needed!
Dragon Claw is the STAB attack for every other type of Pokemon that won't take a super effective move in their face. With two Dragon Dances, Dragonite might be able to sweep an entire team, but good luck with setting up two Dances first! Leftovers is for healing your HP back while sweeping, if nothing hits you. Heck, if you have Multi Scale, and Leftovers heals your HP full, you'll be protected again!

Item: Evolite
Ability: Shed-skin
Nature: Bold
Evs: 252 Defense, 252 S.Defense, 6 S.Attack

Rest
Flamethrower
Toxic
Dragon-pulse

Rest is 1 turn thanks to shed-skin so it is reliable healing. Flamethrower covers Steels. Toxic is for stalling. Dragon-pulse is for covering the one weakness and STAB.

Shed Skin is only a percent chance at healing SLP status, so it may not always be one turn; just a heads up.

I thought of this set:
Item: Wide Lens (to raise the accuracy of Iron Tail)
Abillty: Inner Focus
Nature: Naguhty (high Attack, low Special Defense)
Moveset:
-Iron Tail: Nice power + type coverage against Ice and Rock types and have a chance to lower the foes Defense.
-Dragon Dance: Attack bonus and helpful Speed.
-Ice Beam/Dragon Claw: Against other Dragon types.
-Thunder Punch: For all of those Flying/Water types out there (most of the Water types can learn some Ice type move so it is really helpful) and of course Paralyze chance (10%).

This set offer a type coverage set. It takes care of one of Dragonite weakness (his low Speed).
With Iron tail you wont need to worry about Ice and Rock types. If you use Iron tail after a Dragon Dance and while wearing a Wide Lens, no Rock/Ice types can even have a chance to touch you!
Dragonite got 1 more weakness- Dragon type. You can either get him Ice Beam or Dragon Claw and then with his high Speed and high Attack using the Dragon Dance you will beat any Dragon type in your way.
The last move was a hard choice. I wanted a move that will use Dragonite Attack and will help him against Water type especialy and maybe 1 more type coverage. Thunder Punch cover it all. Using Thunder Punch will not only kill Water types but Flying types too. It is a physical move that also have a Paralyze chance which makes it even more helpful in battle.

I chose the Inner Focus abillty because it is hard to get a Multiscale Dragonite and because having the abillty not to finch is better at this set because any finch means death here (because of his low Special Defense), but having no finch means that you can KO your enemy in only one turn, they wont have time to use a Special Attack move on you!

A weird set here. Yet surprisingly effective....

Dragonite @ Leftovers
Multiscale
Careful
248 HP/ 84 Atk/ 176 SpD

Hone Claws
Substitute
Dragon Rush
Roost

A set that works off his higher attack stat but at the same tim uses hi sbulk effectively. Hone Claws allows him to have a moderatly high attack and makes Dragon Rush quite usable. Substitue helps make him more bulky and can help to keep Multisclae in play. Dragon Rush will almost always hit after one Hone Claws and is a good medium between Dragon Claw and Outrage. Last, Roost increases him longevity.
