Meta Battle Subway PokeBase - Pokemon Q&A

What is a good moveset for Ho-oh?

3 votes

Mine is EV trained in Sp. Attack. It knows:

Sacred Fire: High power, decent accuracy, STAB, 50% chance to burn.

Earth Power: Good power high accuracy, chance to lower Sp. Def, used to deal with Electric and Rock types.

Calm Mind: Used to increase special stats.

Psychic: Good power, high accuracy, chance to lower Sp. Def.

Isn't Sacred fire Physical?
Yes, if you haven't noticed this was from TWO YEARS AGO. This was not the moveset I suggest for Pokemon, just the moveset I had.

Good, rounded attacks. Maybe throw in roost for recovery, or Thunder to take out Kyogre and Lugia.

BandCharge Ho-Oh

Ho-Oh @ Choice Band
Trait: Regenerator
Adamant Nature (+ Atk, - SAtk)
EVs: 252 Atk, 240 HP, 16 SDef
Moves:
- Flame Charge
- Sacred Fire
- Brave Bird
- Earthquake

Simple set. Flame Charge is used to boost Ho-Oh's twiddling Speed, as well as having huge power. Sacred Fire is used when you really need that burn, like when you are facing Zekrom. Brave Bird is more powerful STAB, and Earthquake gets good coverage. The HP EVs were altered so that he could switch into Stealth Rock twice.

Huge power = 40 Base power??
Not really. It gets STAB.
After STAB and Band, it's 112.5. With potential sun, that's 168.75 power.

Ho-oh

Nature: Bold
Ability: Re-generator/Pressure
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 Defense, 252 Hp, and 6 S.def

Calm-mind
Flamethrower
Recover/Roost
Toxic

Calm-mind makes him a special sponge. Flamethrower is for STAB. Recover is awesome healing paired with re generator but it may be worth noting that giving him Pressure and Roost is great for eliminating some of his weaknesses. Toxic is for stalling.

What about sacred fire instead of flamethrower?

Recover -Recover is used over roost for fear of a smart opponent playing something like an Earthquake when he has lost his flying typing. Restores heatlh and softens up the rest of regenerator when injured by stealth rock. I guess you could use roost if you didn't want to get X4 damage from stone edge, but I think earthquakes are a bigger threat for him if he were to lose his flying typing.

Sacred Fire-STAB fire, breaks through most everything that doesn't resist it, and sets in a bunch of burns on the opponent.

Brave Bird-Deals with Kyogre, Palkia, Reshiram, and all those other annoying guys.

Substitute/ Tailwind/ Whirlwind/Earthquake-Tailwind allows him to get past his base 90 speed issue, which can really screw you over in ubers. Earthquake offers another combat move, and is generally pretty handy, especially against things like Palkia, which double resist him, or Zekrom, who can be OHKO'd on the switch with the help of hazards. Whirlwind can allow for phazing, which is an option to pair with Substitute if you want to sacrifice a second move, and substitute allows Ho-oh to PP stall low moves like water spout on Kyogre. Be wary of thunder though. You could combine it with pressure and run it out pretty quickly, but I think his new ability will be of more use.

Suggested item: Leftovers
Suggested Nature: Adamant
Suggested ability: Regenerator

Ho-oh @ Life Orb

Trait: Regnerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)

  • Flame Charge
  • Sacred Fire
  • Brave Bird
  • Earthquake / Recover / Roost
answered Jul 12, 2012 by Mewderator
Recover over roost, as roost makes Ho-Oh be able to get hit by ground moves in the next turn
And also manages to get rid of a x4 weakness and a x2 weakness that I would call a more common Uber weakness.
