Over the past year, the chat room has seen a surge of activity, with a whole bunch of new users joining and generally keeping chat extremely lively. I'm happy to see that, especially when I can easily remember a couple years ago, where it wasn't uncommon to see messages in chat from days or even weeks past, because it was so empty.

However, with this comes the need for better moderation for the chat, and at this point in time, I think that's something we're lacking. As of right now, the only active staff member that frequents chat to my knowledge is PX, and while she does a very good job at keeping order, it's not like she's there 24/7. This is becomes a bit more of a problem during the evening hours in American timezones, when there's usually a decent volume of users in, but no staff around. In the past, HT would generally be around during this time, and him and PX could cover each other's bases pretty well, but this is no longer the case.

This is compounded by the fact that we have a lot of young users that are prone to getting into squabbles, new users that might start breaking rules inadvertently by not knowing any better, or both (I know some of them will probably see this; sorry guys, its true). These things by themselves might not be such a big issue; if chat weren't active, a low amount of moderation would be fine, and if there were more staff around, then we don't have to worry about keeping order. But both of these things are sort of working in tandem at the moment, and while it's stable right now, I can easily see this becoming a potential problem down the line.

It would be nice if more active staff members could be on chat, but that's not something I want to push onto any of them; I'm sure you guys have real lives you have to focus on, and you can't be on a Pokemon chat room all the time. Aside from that, staff members are usually nominated for their contributions to the main site, and that's where their priorities usually lie, so if they aren't active on chat for one reason or another, then that's not something I want to force on them.

However, the fact still stands that we need better chat moderation, so what I propose is making a separate staff role just for moderating chat. All that you'd need to do is give a user Kickbot permissions, minus all the other Editor perks, and that would about do it. The mod team can decide who they think would be best worthy for such a role. I don't think that it'd be too hard to implement, but I talked with Fizz just to be sure (I'm not typing this much just to get my idea shot down bc technical constraints), and he thinks it might be able to be done, so PM, if you read this, tell me if it can be done, and if it can, I strongly encourage implementing it!

Edit: Bumping this because I think this is still very relevant, and I believe the community agrees with me, since this is one of the most upvoted suggestions on the site. PM, if you're out there, your input or feedback would be much appreciated

I'm not against giving specific users kickbot permissions, also if we can give permissions to someone for specific things, it can give a judge on how well they'd deal with future promotions. We would have to be fairly strict on who gets them obviously, also I'm kind of on the side of just promote more auth, though thats just my opinon and not that of the auth team
I'm in the same time zone as HT was. I could try to make more of an effort showing up in chat around evenings. Having more people with kicking powers would be nice, though.
Promoting more auth would help too yeah, but I was under the impression that the staff was fine as is right now and that there were no plans for any further promotions beyond Expert currently.

And yeah, if that's something you wanna do, krlw, then go for it; it'd definitely help. Like I said though, I'm not trying to make you feel obligated into it if you have other commitments that might interfere with that. Even if you do end up frequenting chat more often though, I still think a Chat Mod role would be nice to have (catchy name for that role still pending)
Gonna be real honest here: I don't see much of a point in this. I've been pretty observant of chat the last few weeks and nothing has seemed rule-breaky or out of hand. Also, pretty much every active user is respectful/cool. Creating a new user type specifically just for kickbotting seems excessive, but isn't a terrible idea. This would really only be a precaution against randoms coming on to spam/troll.

I'm almost tempted to suggest a voting system similar to flagging, that lets regular users vote to kick someone, but I know that would be trolled the heck out of and wouldn't work if there weren't enough users present to vote.

Well as long as we're volunteering, I'm almost always online (EST) and would be totally willing to moderate chat.
Definently need another person to kick people. People can ruin the chat for as long as they want until PX comes, and she isn’t on all the time.
good point, i'm suggesting melcakes
I'm just here to say that I think PX is a really cute girl.

I suggest that if you find particularly raudy users still, give staff an @ in the discord and there'll probably be someone alive
suggestions and recommendations will come later, refrain from them for now.  Also, I haven't actually see than much 'bad behaviour' on chat, there have only been a few reports over the last few weeks at least, few complaints, and I do reguarly read the existing chat logs.

Again I'm for this but I'd like to know if its actually necessary for right now. Often when there's an influx of new users there's also new auth. I think we're goign to discuss both options, and also of course it's still PM's choice.

Also sempi i am a cute girl wdym
other than certain people sharing a bit too many details of their personal life, there haven’t really been consistent annoyances in chat at all, from what I’ve seen. I’m not against this idea, though.
Yeah, I mentioned the current situation in chat is somewhat stable currently. But all it'd take is one spambot coming on during evening for Americans to completely wreak havoc. I know we can always ping staff on Discord, but there's always a chance that it'll take a hot minute before one of you can come online, and a good portion of the active users in chat don't have a Discord to ping staff with anyways.
please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please
If you were to promote me to super administer, I think I would do finely.
Bump, i didn't see it with my own eyes but with wall stalking it really looks like it's getting out of control
I'm in full support of this, and i'm commenting to help bump this (pm please!). I'm active/idle in chat 7 hours a day, just mini modding it, and the amount of times inappropriate convos come up is INSANE. most of the time i stop it verbally, but sometimes i have to ping mods or spam px.
If this does get implemented, i volunteer for the position.
For anybody that doesn't know TY he really fits the role! He's always a neutral voice and manages to calm everyone down.
I agree with Syl
This would be a really good idea to implement (And Ty would be a great Chatmod)
Now that this has been bumped for no reason at all...
This suggestion seemed like a great suggestion back then but is rather obsolete now. The team of staff members has expanded. There's usually someone with kicking powers either in the chat room, or on the discord server.
Hey, at least something changed-- that's all I was aiming for
Even if chat modding has been better recently (which I'm not that sure about?) I think it's worth adding this feature. It can only help, and nothing is to say that we'll be in a good position to handle chat at all times in the future.
