The Psychic type has few outright strengths, however, it also has few weaknesses. In the first generation, Psychic ended up being massively overpowered, mainly due to a complete lack of remotely powerful Bug moves, its only weakness. Furthermore, a mistake in the game meant that Ghost-type moves had no effect on Psychic (although this only affected the low-powered Lick). Generation II rectified the situation with the addition of the Dark type, plus better Pokemon and moves of all types.

The chart below shows the strength of the Psychic type against every type combination. The numbers in the squares show the fraction damage the move will do (i.e. ½ means 50% damage and not very effective, while 4 means 400% - super-effective).
For example, look where the Grass and Poison types intersect to see how good a Psychic-type move would be against a pokemon like Venusaur. You will see that it is 200%.
