Terastal in Scarlet/Violet
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet introduces a new battle mechanic known as Terastal. In Paldea, Pokémon can Terastallize
, which makes them shine like gems and gives a boost to a certain type.
Terastal mechanics
During a Pokémon battle, there is a Terastal
button that initiates the phenomenon. The Pokémon becomes crystallized, may change type and gains a boost for that type and its moves. The type they become is determined by their Tera Type
- Pokémon in the wild will usually be the same Tera Type as their regular type, but other Tera Types are available. For example Pikachu would usually remain Electric type, but Pikachu with a Flying Tera Type could be found.
Tera Raid Battles
Raid Battles make a return from Pokémon Sword & Shield, this time utilising the Terastal phenomenon. They are found at large crystal formations (see image to the right). The raid boss will be a particular Tera Type; completing raid battles may let you encounter rare Tera Types. The crystals at the entrance to the raid dungeon seem to give a hint as to that raid's Tera Type.
Tera Raid Battles can be challenged with up to three other trainers. In these battles the player can attack or heal with their own timing, without having to wait their turn. Once defeated, the Pokémon can be caught.
Tera Types
Each Pokémon has a Tera Type as described above. When they Terastallize, as well as crystallizing they also don some headgear that hints at their Tera Type. Below are the Tera Types we've seen so far.
