I think randoms is more of a knowledge game than anything. Singles is obviously different than doubles, but I think in general, the best thing to do is know what you have, know what your opponent has, and try to play around it without revealing too much. Sometimes you take risks like setting up early, sometimes that does or doesn't pay off, but it's a format where your game plan improves the more of what you know about your opponent improves. You know what's a threat, you know what needs to be kept alive, you start to know which mon is going to be your wincon, and that's exactly why you don't want to reveal too much of your team too early, that same knowledge is useful to your opponent.
I think there are a couple of things that are more obvious, like trying to get up the sticky webs early and things like that, but also more complicated things like knowing which set a Pokemon is (band/scarf/life orb, which coverage moves, etc) and especially which Tera type is also important. Because yes you have your sweepers, but sometimes the game plan is sending your sweeper in, clicking the Tera to safely set up, and win.
Then sometimes you just have those games where your only counter to the 50 steel types on your opponent's team died early or your team just sucks and there's nothing you can do about it.
