What is the purpose of mail?

I don't get the mail factor .how do you get mail to other people and how do other people get it to u

U let pokemon give it to them during a trade, and maybe have it say "take care of chimeco" or "good luck filling your pokedex", just give it to your pokemon to hold before a trade (but I'd be happier if the traded pokemon had an item, just sayin')
