Could there be a thunderstorm in Pokemon games?

i was playing Pokemon platinum an in a rainy zone instead of just rain there was lightning/flashes of light what was that

Yes I have had this happen. I t is a thunderstorm, and the same thing happens with Thundurus as I recall
