What happens when a Pokemon with lighningrod uses Thunder in a double battle?

Would the move work normally, or redirect to itself and boost sp. attack?

Simply put, no.

It would be ridiculous if Lightningrod redirected a Pokemon's own attacks to itself. It doesn't do that in singles, it won't do that in doubles.
