So I've been playing Pokemon X, and I use a move thats super effective agisint the opponent (In story mode) and it's left with one hp. Example: My Absol vs a Medichan, I use Psycho Cut on him while I'm Mega Evolved. For some reason, he survives with only one HP (His HP bar went done fast and everything.) And this isnt the first time it's happen. The Pokemon doesn't have sturdy as an ability nor does it have the focus sash. What's going on?! (Note: This happened to me a lot)

It might just be the way the damage calculation works out. You might have been using False Swipe or maybe the opponent has a Focus Band, but I'm sure you would realize it as you would see the activation.

Or your game is just glitching out on you.

Hope I helped even if just a little bit! :)

It's not like that, it happened to me a total of 3 times. 1 was when I used surf on a wild lvl 3 Flecthling with my lvl 40 at the time Greninja, and the othere was when I used Fire Pledge on a ScatterBug (wild) with my Mega Blaziken Theres no way they could have sturdy, and wild pokemon sure cant hold focus sash
Hmmm. That is peculiar. Your game might just be glitching out on you.
My game does this to
Its most likely a glitch because it happpened to me alot and it's anoying

That, my friend, is just luck.

Your problem with the Lv. 40 Greninja vs. Lv. 3 Fletchling may be because of one of these:

  • Your Pokemon has a really bad (Sp.) Attack stat.
  • Your opponent has a really good (Sp.) Defense stat.
  • Your Pokemon's nature decreases your (Sp.) Attack stat.
  • Your opponent's nature increases their (Sp.) Defense stat! xD
  • In damage calculation, there is a factor that includes RNG. You might just be getting a really low number in this RNG.
  • Your game might be glitched.
  • Possibly all of the above. xD

Of course, you can always hit it again and it will be fine. However, if it bothers you that much just let it have a(n) (Sp.) Attack boosting item, ability or move. But otherwise, yeah, it's luck. Sorry. D:

Hope I helped. :)

By "1 HP" I think you mean it is in low red health.

On certain Pokemon, a tiny sliver of health can actually be 6-8 HP.

As for why this happens, the damage calculator in the games is actually a RNG, or a Random Number Generator. The game calculates a range of values of an attack's damage, then picks one to use. As for why a Pokemon hangs on with a sliver of health, this is actually really bad luck. :P

For your specific example, a Mega Absol using Psycho Cut on a Medicham with certain IVs, EVs and Natures generates the damage values of 214, 216, 219, 221, 224, 226, 229, 231, 234, 236, 239, 241, 244, 246, 249, 252 damage on a 230 HP Medicham. Notice how one of the values is 229, leaving the Pokemon with 1 HP. (This is just a certain scenario, with both Pokemon at Level 100)

Either that, or your game is bugging out on you. This shouldn't be a problem if you win the required battles/slay the wild Pokemon.

That was a complicated answer.
