If smeargle uses sketch and is holding a choice Item will it be allowed to use that move?

will a choice Item work on a smeargle using sketch i'm a little confused on this and I want some help.

I tested it on Showdown in a Balanced Hackmons with a Bronzong holding Choice Band having Sketch and Earthquake, I used Sketch and I after that I was able to chose Earthquake and the Sketched move (in this case was Psychic).
