What happens to lower rank Contest Ribbons when you get the higher rank ones?

In Gens III and IV, higher-ranked ribbons did not replace lower-ranked ribbons; they remained with the higher-ranked ribbons.

In Gen VI, contest ribbons can only be obtained when winning the Master Rank, so nothing happens to the lower-ranked for they don't exist.
