PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

So I was just curious, I’m trying to hatch (eventually) an Oranguru for Doubles with 0Spe. IVs for Trick Room/Shuckle shenans, and I have to breed that 0Spe IV down thru like 7 different pokémon to get it to the Oranguru.

Right now, I’m trying to get a male shellos to breed with a female bidoof, and so on, but I’m getting really unlucky. So I decided to keep saving until I was literally one step away from hatching it, then I started soft-resetting.

However, I’ve done this 4 times so far, and I’m going to continue doing it after I ask this question, but each time it’s been a female. 4 for 4. I haven’t been checking the Nature of it, so I don’t know if it’s exaclty the same each time.

So my question is, is an egg that you receive from the daycare ALWAYS going to be the same, or can it vary? Does anyone else know?

So, theoretically, is it possible to SR to get the right nature/gender??

Bonus Question: Along the same lines, if a Pokémon’s gender ratio is 50-50 (male-female) then if I get only two eggs and run around till they hatch, without getting more, am I guaranteed to have one be male, and the other one be female?

And bonus-bonus points question: could you SR for a Shiny in this way?

thanks, and sorry that was so much, and confusing too.

Basically, 3 questions in one; sorry.
1. Does soft resetting a given egg change the outcome as far as stats, gender, and nature, when you hatch it?
2. Are the gender ratios given, or are they just a %chance?
3. Can you SR egg, I guess as many times as 4000 or whatever, and get a Shiny?

Short answer: soft resetting doesn’t work and is a bad idea.

Does soft resetting a given egg change the outcome as far as stats, gender, and nature, when you hatch it?

No, the Pokémon inside the Egg is determined when you actually obtain it, not when it hatches. If you want to soft reset, you’ll have to do it immediately before picking up the Egg. However, I don’t think it is faster that way, since you’ll only be hatching one Pokémon at a time — hatching normally will let you stack as many as you can fit in your party.

In addition, you can get decent offers for trades if you want to get value from breedjects with good IVs.

Are the gender ratios given, or are they just a %chance?

Not exactly sure what you mean by ‘given’, but the Egg’s gender becomes guaranteed and unchangable when you obtain it, as above. In terms of which gender will actually be assigned at that time, it’s a percentage chance derived from a fraction, yes. So if you want to have a male, you’ll need to get another Egg and try your luck again.

This is best thought of as a statistical average. You are never guaranteed to get a male or a female, you only know how likely it is that you will get a Pokémon of either sex.

Can you SR egg, I guess as many times as 4000 or whatever, and get a Shiny?

No, unfortunately. As above, the Egg’s properties are determined when you obtain it, so soft resetting before it hatches will cause you to hatch the exact same Pokémon every time. If you want a Shiny, stock yourself up on Eggs, get a Pokémon with Flame Body/Magma Armor and ride Tauros, only stopping to put hatched Pokémon in the PC or get more Eggs. It will still take a long time if your luck is normal, but you’ll get there eventually.

Thanks that’s extremely helpful. And yeah usually I use the Masuda method for that 1/512 chance.
As far as the gender thing, I guess I meant, if the ratio is 50/50, is there a 50 PERCENT chance that it will be either gender? Or is it guaranteed that for every two pokémon you hatch, one will be male, and the other female. Does that make more sense?
Ah right. It’s a percentage chance, which is best thought of as a statistical average. You are never guaranteed to get a male or a female, you only know how likely it is that you will get a Pokémon of either sex.
I’ll add this to the answer, if it’s still not clear let me know.

female Pokemon being breed are always the Pokemon that hatches(not including ditto breeding) next, some Pokemon have a higher chance of being male/female from hatching, catching and batching a pool of eggs.your just unlucky if females is all you get. another thing is that natures have a higher chance of 1 nature than other depending on what nature the parents are. moving on, shellos and bidoof (DANG BIDOOF)are in the same egg group, but, both mother and farther (not counting ditto) have to be in the same egg group.of course, genderless Pokemon and ones in the Undiscovered egg group cannot breed. it is possible to get the same nature, IV and be shiny breeding and catching, but its very unlikley, so, 1: I dont understand much, but from the bits I CAN understand your asking if Pokemon can have identical features. yes, but its hard to get them to. 2:its based off the Pokemon gender chance game freak left us with 3:it will take time (maybe you will get it first time) but maybe as far as your 50000000000000000000000000000000(you get the point)00000000000000th time but, you have a chance of getting a shiny (even if that shiny happens to be a useless magikarp).

Magikarp aren’t useless - they evolve into Gyarados. ;D
Mega Magikarp. Lol. And I happened to spend a little over an hour chaining till I got a Shiny ‘Karp, thank you very much.
