Breeding counterparts, how does it work?

Question

When breeding Nidoran(F) with Nidoran(M), or Volbeat with Illumise, will the egg give you either the male or female variant at random, or does it work differently?

Might depend from game to game, although I am pretty sure nidoqueen can’t breed

There are two pairs of Pokémon families where the male and female are different species. In these cases, an Egg produced has an even chance to hatch into either the male or female variant.

Yes, If you breed Nidoran♀, you may get Nidoran♂, and vice versa; the same goes for Volbeat and Illumise. Also worth noting, male variations of the family can only produce female variants when breeding with Ditto in Generation 5 and afterwards. :P
