Do I have to get or give the Pokemon I want to evolve by trade?

Hello, I recently traded my onix holding metal coat like recommended but didnt get steelix(in my pokedex). So I was wondering if I was the one needing to trade the Pokemon holding the item or if I was supposed to get the Pokemon by trade while holding the item.

You must receive the Pokemon in order to get Dex data for it
