Are there draws in pokemon battles?

I ask this because I ended a match with explosion which ko'ed both my pokemon and my opponent's pokemon. We both had 0 pokes left, yet the game declared my opponent the winner. How does the game decide who wins and who loses in these scenarios? The first pokemon to faint loses?

Well because your pokemon faited first so your opponent is declared the winner. Its really who survives last.
