What happens if I don't fight the old man on the bridge in white 2?

For some context, there's this old man on the bridge east of Opelucid City who claims to be on a 999 win streak and won't let you pass thru the bridge unless you fight him. If say, I'm feeling merciful and decides to surf across the river, is there something significant that will happen if I don't send this old man crying?

Absolutely nothing. You can bypass him and go back to fight him at a later point in time if you so choose.
